The UC Irvine School of Medicine is launching a new program aimed at producing future physicians who are committed to serving the African-American, black and Caribbean islander communities in California, the United States and beyond.
Called Leadership Education to Advance Diversity-African, Black and Caribbean (LEAD-ABC), it is the first medical school program of its kind in the nation to address the unique health needs of these communities.
This four-year medical education program offers an optional fifth year to allow the medical student to obtain an additional master's degree (MBA, MPH, MS-BATS). In its inaugural year, LEAD-ABC will offer two full scholarships to cover tuition and fees for the medical degree, as well as tuition and fees for a master's degree program at UC Irvine.
Founded by Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Carol Major, and Vice Dean for Medical Education, Dr. Khanh-Van Le-Bucklin, this UCI School of Medicine initiative is driven by a vision to develop the next generation of physician leaders who are committed to public service, social justice and advocacy within the African, black and Caribbean communities.
