Summer is upon us! Having completed three School of Medicine commencements, it's time to take a moment to admire some of the innovative research our faculty is doing, share our successes in securing grant funding, and look forward as we continue efforts to build our faculty, develop new educational programs and reinforce our clinical infrastructure. It’s also a time to celebrate our students as they pursue the next chapter in their careers.
In this edition of our school newsletter, you’ll read about new studies published in top tier journals, new grants we’ve received and the promising research they’ll support. You’ll learn about how our education programs are developing and how our students are achieving great things. We’ll also take a look back at the commencement ceremonies we held and share in the excitement as we graduated the next generation of healthcare providers, teachers and researchers. Here at home, we’ve recently filled several key positions with leaders instrumental to increasing and improving our discoveries and breakthroughs in health. Among them are Allen M. Chen, MD, who will be joining us as the chair of Radiation Oncology on Oct. 5, Allen P. Kong, MD, who was appointed medical director of Critical Care Services, and John E. Gross, MD, FACS, who recently joined the UCI School of Medicine as the vice dean for clinical affairs. The addition of these new individuals further insures our bright future. Also, in the realignment of the administration and finance departments of the dean’s office, Francine Jeffrey was appointed associate dean of administration and Rebecca Brusuelas-James was appointed associate dean for finance and clinical operations. As I’ve said before, with new leadership comes many new and innovative ideas to discover, teach, and heal. We’re also making tremendous progress with our Clinical Trials Business Transformation Initiative, RISE. A critical component of our organization and a key part of our strategic plan, the clinical trials operations are being transformed with an eye toward efficiency, effectiveness and scalability. More news on this initiative will be coming your way as we implement our plans. I encourage you to share news about your departments, faculty, staff and students. Send your suggestions to SOMNews@uci.edu.
Sincerely, Michael J. Stamos, MD Dean, UCI School of Medicine
