UCI Microbiology & Molecular Genetics Professor Emiliana Borrelli, PhD, was honored in April during the inaugural Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles (IIC Los Angeles) Italian Research Day. During the event, Dr. Borrelli presented an overview of her research and was honored with the IIC Los Angeles Creativity Award recognizing Italian excellence throughout the world. Dr. Borrelli studies dopamine—a neurotransmitter and central neuromodulator of the central nervous system—and its role in brain diseases, movement disorders and addiction. Her work not only serves to unravel molecular mechanisms of dopamine’s actions, but provides valuable leads toward novel strategies for translational intervention. Dr. Borrelli has received numerous awards for her research, including most recently the 2017 Knight in the National Order of the Légion d’Honneur (France) and the 2017 Golgi Medal in Neuroscience (Italy).
Other individuals honored by the IIC for their work in science and technology include lifetime achievement award winners the late Renato Dulbecco, a Nobel Prize winner in medicine and president emeritus at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (2007), and Andrew J. Viterbi, co-founder of Qualcomm Inc. and inventor of the Viterbi algorithm used in satellite and mobile technology (2010).
Italian Research Day is part of an initiative launched by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) to promote the important work of Italian scientists and researchers worldwide. This first Italian Research Day was organized by the IIC Los Angeles in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UC Irvine's School of Medicine and the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation (ISSNAF). The IIC Los Angeles Creativity Award was designed specifically for the Italian Cultural Institute by Emilio Cavallini, internationally known artist and designer, and was inspired by the ceiling of the Pantheon in Rome.
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles was founded in 1984 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to promote Italian culture in Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Directed by Valeria Rumori since 2015, the Institute promotes Italian Language through language courses and events in collaboration with numerous local institutions with the goal of presenting Italy in all of its cultural richness: architecture, cinema, design, literature, music, science, technology, theater and the visual arts.
