Eli Soyfer, a second year medical student, was awarded first place in “Medical Student Research” at the American College of Physicians Southern California Chapters Annual Scientific Meeting 2021 for his presentation, "Utilization of Non-Invasive Sample Sources for Identification of Somatic and Germline Mutations in Hematologic Malignancies and Clonal Hematopoiesis.”
Soyfer has been working on a project in Dr. Angela Fleischman’s lab to identify people at high risk of developing hematologic malignancies, particularly myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN).
The lab has been developing a protocol to identify somatic clones in MPN families, including affected and unaffected family members. This screening method has used the new plate-based digital PCR (dPCR) acquired by Sprague Hall, which has allowed for the precise and efficient quantification of mutation allele burden in MPN patient samples.
Unaffected members of MPN families can harbor clonal hematopoiesis, being great candidates for observational and preventative studies. Soyfer hopes to demonstrate the potential for dPCR in tracking and predicting disease outcomes and show the use of non-invasive sample sources (saliva instead of blood) for patient and familial screenings.
Soyfer is also co-author of the following review: “Inflammation in Myeloid Malignancies: From Bench to Bedside,” which you can check out here.
