On the morning of March 18, nearly 30,000 graduating medical students around the country participated in annual Match Day ceremonies. At UCI, 96 of them gathered in the Bren Events Center for the festive, emotional event. They won’t actually receive their MDs until June, but their journeys as physicians started on this day.
Following UCI tradition, each future doctor was called randomly to a podium – one at a time – to open an envelope and read aloud before hundreds of family members, friends and classmates the name and location of the hospital where he or she will spend the next three to seven years pursuing postgraduate medical training.
As always, UCI’s 2022 medical students matched into top programs across the country – such as Stanford, Northwestern, Baylor, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Yale and the Cleveland Clinic – with internal medicine, emergency medicine and psychiatry as their leading specialty choices. They successfully matched into highly competitive specialties, including dermatology, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, urology, and orthopedic surgery.
UCI’s commitment to primary care was also demonstrated with 44 percent of students choosing to pursue residencies in pediatrics, family medicine, internal medicine and obstetrics & gynecology. And 46 percent of them successfully matched to a University of California-based program, with about half of those securing a position at UCI Medical Center.
