Dear colleagues,
The campus is buzzing with activity as the summer winds to a close and our new academic year gets underway. We are thrilled to welcome medical student Class of 2026 to our campus! This month we held orientation week and the White Coat Ceremony which are annual traditions for our new class of future physicians.

For the last several years, due to a generous donation to the UCI School of Medicine, we have been able to supply each new incoming medical student with a handheld ultrasound device. We’ve already seen how this unique device contributes to their learning and is something they can take with them in their future practice. We want to offer a big welcome to our new medical students and we look forward to watching your journeys as physicians!

On the research front, we are thrilled to announce that UCI has won a five-year, $14 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Xiangmin Xu, PhD, UCI Chancellor’s Fellow of anatomy and neurobiology and principal investigator, will lead an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional team to study the affects of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
In a similar vein, Josh Grill, PhD, and Daniel Gillen, PhD, received a $3.7 million grant from the NIH to focus on participant recruitment and retainment for Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders research.
As the opioid crisis continues in our county, UCI researcher Stephen Mahler, PhD, and his team were also awarded a $3.5 million grant for addiction research.
Our researchers continue to astound with their awards and honors. Dr. Palczewski received the 2022 Ludwig von Sallman Prize from the International Society for Eye Research. Department of Pediatrics Professor Dan. M. Cooper, MD, was honored with the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Distinguished University Service Award.
Kudos as well to the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center for being selected to join Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN), which is the National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Treatment & Diagnosis program for conducting cooperative early-phase clinical trials in cancer.
Additionally, our colleagues at UCI Medical Center have 108 doctors who have been recognized as 2022 Castle Connolly Top Doctors. Representing the top seven percent of doctors in the nation, these notable doctors have been nominated by their peers and thoroughly validated by Castle Connolly’s research team to ensure that they deliver the highest quality patient care. I’m tremendously proud of the work that all of our medical staff do each and every day. Please take a moment to congratulate your colleagues on this incredible honor!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Stamos, MD Dean, UCI School of Medicine
