Update from Dean Johnson and the Owen COVID-19 Taskforce
Beginning this evening, the Owen building will be locked and remain locked 24/7 until further notice. As we move all staff and faculty to remote operations, please exercise your community responsibility if entering/leaving to ensure building remains secure (i.e., please don’t let others enter behind you). All Owen faculty, staff, and students can access the building using their Commodore Card.

Given that we have had confirmed COVID-19 cases on campus, the pace at which the disease spreads, and that it appears it can live on some surfaces for an extended period, we urge you to prepare for the very real possibility that you will not have access to campus buildings. If that happens at Owen, following the initial period of closure and cleaning, we likely will be able to grant minimal access to the building on an exception basis only. This move will be in the best interest of our community in an effort of personal health and safety.

While we cannot meet in person for Closing Bell, we do have bright spot this evening. The TFC has arranged a virtual Closing Bell tonight. Please join on the live stream Facebook or Instagram. All members of the community are welcome to attend. Thank you to all who made this creative event happen.

Mail/Packages: As the building will be locked, mail, package, and other pick-up/deliveries will be discontinued. All mail, UPS, FedEx, and others will be directed to Station B (Central Mail Services). Notices have been posted on the exterior doors to inform those who might try to deliver.

Evening Security: VUPD will continue normal patrolling of Owen and campus. Our security guard, Sharon, will be onsite Monday – Thursday from 5:30pm – 9:30pm for your safety and comfort in coming to the building. We will not have our normal Friday – Sunday coverage until further notice.

Facilities Issues: If you have any facility related issue that needs attention, please email facilities.owen@vanderbilt.edu

Daytime Student Information (Community-Wide Update)
Guidance around pass/fail:

Many questions have surfaced around the grading system this Mod. Owen made the decision to give faculty the option to move to pass/fail for daytime courses in order to alleviate pressure both on the faculty and the student as they made the quick change to remote teaching and learning. Faculty have the prerogative to use the pass/fail option or to assign traditional grades (with exceptions of MAcc students who are have educational requirements for the CPA exam).
  • If a class was moved to pass/fail, it will not affect a student’s GPA unless they fail the course.
  • If you are a student and do not know if your course is pass/fail, you need to contact your professor.
  • Regardless of the grading system, faculty are here to support student learning.
Help us improve your experience:

We are surveying faculty and students about their experience with the first week of remote delivery of Owen courses. Feedback will help us identify ways to improve teaching and learning. To improve teaching and learning, we want your feedback on the first week of remote delivery of Owen courses. Today, you will receive an email from the Office of the Dean with a link to a short survey. Please take a few moments to provide your input.
