Faculty and Staff Information
Staff

All staff need to be on Skype for business. Please ensure that you are able to use this messaging system so that anyone in the community can reach out to you during the day. This needs to be done by close of business on Wednesday, March 18th.

Please go into the Owen calendar and remove any events that are no longer taking place.  If you have already rescheduled or moved an event to a virtual platform, add the information to the calendar.  A best practice is to use this calendar to inform the entire community.   Please have your events removed and updated by Friday, March 20.

Helpful Hints for Going Remote

First of all a quick link on Zoom to maximize the available bandwidth:
https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362463-Wireless-WiFi-Connection-Issues

General tips:
  • Wired is better than wireless
  • If possible connect your device to your router
  • Mute your microphone when not speaking
  • Stop your webcam when you don’t need it
  • Disable HD webcam video
  • Close other unnecessary applications on your computer
  • Avoid bandwidth theft during your session:
    • Don’t perform large downloads
    • Don’t perform large uploads
    • Streaming video (e.g. Netflix)
    • Other high-bandwidth activities (e.g. Live YouTube / gaming)
If you must work using your WiFi signal:
  • Remove as many devices from the network as possible (e.g. phones, tablets, streaming devices)
  • Muting the audio and calling in via your cellphone will reduce the bandwidth Zoom consumes
During your session:
  • If you plan to share videos or other rich content formats, don’t use the camera at the same time and mute your microphone
  • Utilize screen sharing when needed and disable to decrease bandwidth use when possible
These are just a few tips. Please go to it.vanderbilt.edu if you need more resources on Zoom.

Please avoid coming to campus, but you can reach any staff or faculty member by email or phone.

Remote Teaching
A box folder has been created called “Remote Teaching.” This will serve as a repository for all mass emails and resources related to virtual teaching. Training sessions times/locations for Brightspace are here.
