Gianna Fote, a Biological Chemistry MD/PhD candidate, secures first runner up (2nd place) in 2018 Grad Slam competition. Demonstrating the excellence, importance and relevance of her research, Fote was among four SOM students to make the top ten in this year’s event. Fote discovered her passion for neuroscience research as a pre-med undergraduate at Yale University. While she deeply wished to help individuals with neurodegenerative disease, she began to realize that a neurologist’s treatment options are limited; we currently have no cures or therapies for many neurological illnesses. Fote concluded that a combination of contributions through both clinical practice and basic research would be the best way for her to push the field forward, and matriculated to UCI’s MD/PhD program. She currently researches how brain cells dispose of their waste, and how that process may fail in Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Other SOM Grad Slam finalists included Sarah Cross, PhD, Anatomy and Neurobiology, Megan Curran, MD/PhD, Anatomy and Neurobiology, and Christie-Lynn Mortales, PhD, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Find out more about each of them and their research here. Grad Slam is a systemwide competition that showcases and awards the best three-minute research presentations by graduate scholars. This competition not only highlights the excellence, importance and relevance of UCI graduate scholars and their research, but it is also designed to increase graduate students' communication skills and their capacity to effectively present their work with poise and confidence. It is an opportunity to share accomplishments with the campus, friends of UCI, the local community, and the broader public.
