Drs. Chris Fox, Khan-Van Le-Bucklin, Michael J. Stamos, Warren Wiechmann, and Julie Youm, were instrumental in securing the fifth consecutive Apple Distinguished School award for 2019-2022.
UCI School of Medicine has been selected as an Apple Distinguished School for 2019-2022, a three-year designation. This selection marks the fifth consecutive cycle that the medical school has received this prestigious honor given for continuous innovation in learning & teaching, and for its educational environment. The school of medicine is one of only two higher education facilities in California to be awarded this distinction, including California State University in Long Beach.
“Physicians of tomorrow will need to operate more efficiently and independently than ever before, which will require innovations in both the technologies they use and the learning they receive,” said Warren Wiechmann, MD, assistant clinical professor in emergency medicine at the UCI School of Medicine. “The iMedEd Initiative has been a vital part of our curriculum due to the continued support of our leadership, faculty, and most importantly, our students."
In 2010, the medical school launched its iMedEd Initiative to incorporate innovative technologies redefining medical education and advancing clinical skills for the 21st century, becoming one of the first in the nation to use the iPad as a catalyst for digital curriculum reform.
It has since adopted many smartphone-based advances that are turning the modern doctor’s bag into the equivalent of a high-tech mobile clinic. Today, every medical student at UCI has an iPad, and this August all 104 members of the class of 2023 received the hand-held Butterfly IQ ultrasound device.

In all, 470 schools in 34 countries received the Apple Distinguished School designation this cycle. Since the iMedEd Initiative started, UCI School of Medicine has graduated more than 500 digitally-literate physicians. To learn more about how technology is changing medical education, click here.
