Professor co-writes book on how membranes and their proteins work

Pictured: Stephen H. White, PhD, professor in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics, has co-authored the book Cell Boundaries (Garland Science, 2021) to help students understand the structural and organizational principles of membranes.

Cell Boundaries (Garland Science, 2021) was 13 years in the making and describes how membranes and their proteins work. White and his collaborators, Gunnar von Heijne, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Stockholm University, and Donald M. Engelman, Eugene Higgins Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, wrote the book to expand advanced bioscience students’ knowledge about the basic physics and physical chemistry of membranes.

They also share the history behind some of the critical early breakthroughs, highlighting adventures and missteps in the process of making those discoveries.
