UCI School of Medicine faculty member, Selma Masri, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry, received the 2022 Johnson & Johnson WiSTEM2D Scholars Award for Science. The program recognizes one scholar in each STEM2D discipline: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Manufacturing and Design.
Masri is recognized as an emerging leader in a new field that links circadian rhythm to metabolism and tumor biology. Her current program is focused on the alarming increase in young-onset colorectal cancer, which is believed to be caused by environmental factors, potentially including sleep/light cycles and dietary factors. Based on her studies in genetic models, she proposes that disruption of the circadian clock contributes to activation of colorectal cancer progression and may be particularly relevant for the early onset cancer.
The Johnson & Johnson committee also praised Masri for her exceptional mentorship of under-represented minorities in science. They concluded overall “she has a history of selecting important questions for investigation and making novel contributions, including a demonstrated commitment to mentoring of women scientists.”
Six diverse, international female recipients were selected out of a competitive global applicant pool that garnered more than 650 applications from 40 countries. The award provides each recipient with $150,000 in research funding and three years of mentorship from Johnson & Johnson.
