The integration of art and care was a highlight of MHAP during the fall and winter of 2023-24. February Schwartz Rounds for Compassionate Care featured multiple Family Medicine faculty, clinicians, and residents sharing their work on Art and Healing.
Dr. Tan Nguyen discussed his work on engaging patients in poetry and drawing. Dr. Shannon Melcher, former UCI FM Resident and current Clinician at UCI Tustin, shared her art of quilting and its importance in connecting with family and friends as part of her wellness. Dr. Andrew Gallardo (FM, R2) shared how creating art was something that gave him and other residents a collaborative creative space, reminding them that they collectively were watching over patients and each other (the artwork in this month’s photo is Dr. Gallardo’s). Finally, Dr. Rajaram (palliative care) shared how poetry has supported him in navigating challenging moments throughout his career. It was a transformative moment to share the important role of art in medicine with the UCI Health community.
February also marked the completion of the collaborative art project with UC Riverside’s Center for Health Disparities Research, “Comic Relief,” where people who provided care for others took a series of 10 arts workshops to foster their use of art in addressing issues related to trauma and burnout that occurs in care work. To celebrate the completion of the workshops MHAP co-hosted an art show of the participants’ work. See photos from the event on our new Instagram page @uci_medhumarts
Plexus: We are thrilled to announce the upcoming release of the 25th issue of Plexus, the medical student-run Medical Humanities and Arts Journal. This is a significant milestone for us, and we can't wait to share it with you all. Please mark your calendars for May 9, 2024, the date of our annual MHAP symposium. We will be presenting the issue “Navigating” and showcasing all the creative work of UCI SOM students, faculty, and staff. We are immensely proud of Chris Sahagian (MS4) and the Plexus team for their exceptional work on this momentous year’s issue.
Publications and Presentations: Going to STFM? Make sure you check out Dr. Nguyen’s presentation on his Arts and Poetry in the Clinic project. You can also read his and Dr. Shapiro’s work in Annals of Family Medicine. Dr. McMullin, Delight Satter of the CDC, and artist ET Russian published a comic, “High Rates,” that discusses why physicians see high rates of chronic illness in Native American populations in the journal Literature and Medicine. The comic was based on their Historical Wisdom podcast episode of the same title. Additional medical humanities and arts publications from UCI FM faculty across the decades are on our website's publications page.
