Attention Researchers! Our Contract with DNASTAR for Lasergene Software is Expiring Soon – Respond to Survey by March 25
The School of Medicine’s subscription for Lasergene software is expiring soon and will be canceled if we do not have evidence that it is being used. Our subscription is shared with the UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences.

We are in the process of determining usage and whether we should renew the contract. The usage data is not definitive though there is indication that there is very limited usage of this software among School of Medicine researchers. Is this software a necessity for your work or is there software that is better suited to current needs? The subscription will be canceled if we do not get sufficient response to this survey by March 25.

From the Office of Research: Federal Certifications and Acknowledgments
Due to shifts in the federal agency funding landscape, do not sign any certifications or acknowledgments or complete any surveys regarding grant compliance or project activities. Instead, forward such communications to Jeff Warner, Senior Director, Sponsored Projects Administration. Authorized Organizational Representatives (AORs) in the Office of Research will handle these matters. If you have trouble getting in touch with your Sponsored Programs offices/Contracts and grants office, contact Nancy Lewis, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Administration. Learn more about the impact of federal executive orders and directives on federal grants and contracts.

For other questions or concerns, contact Paul Lekutai, Director, Federal and Non-Federal Sponsored Projects, or Jeff Warner.

To All Researchers: Learn More About International Shipping — Compliance is Required
Does your lab ship internationally? Before shipping, consult the UCI Office of Research’s website devoted to International Shipping. UC Irvine does not have a centralized shipping center for international or domestic shipments. In the absence of a centralized site, each sender must consider that regulatory requirements may apply depending on the item, destination, end-user and end-use.

To help ensure that UCI faculty, staff and students do not experience customs delays, seizure of goods or inadvertent violation of federal export laws, please submit a Shipment Review Form (PDF) to the Export Control Office. The review will help determine whether an export license is required. Please note that international shipments include items hand-carried or packed in baggage during travel outside the U.S.

The guidelines for international shipping can also be found on the School of Medicine Office of Research website.

Questions? Contact Export Control Officer Brian McCurdy.

Good News!

Rémi Buisson, PhD (Biological Chemistry, Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center member), received an NIH R21 titled, “NF-KB regulation by the DNA damage response.” Innate immunity activation in response to DNA damage is critical to recruiting immune cells and eliminating cells that are too damaged to be repaired. This proposal’s goal is to explain how cells can trigger an innate immune response in the context of DNA damage-induced transcription blockage. We propose that cells utilize an alternative signaling pathway without relying solely on gene expression to trigger an innate immune response that alerts neighboring cells of potential dangers and recruits immune cells.

UCI Depression Institute Speaker Series
New Insights on the Molecular and Cellular Bases of Depression, by Gustavo Turecki, MD, PhD, FRSC, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry, McGill University, Scientific Director, Douglas Institute

Gustavo Turecki’s laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying depression and antidepressant response using a combination of functional genomic approaches in both human and animal models. In his talk, he will provide an overview of recent studies focusing on the effect of antidepressants on non-coding RNAs and their downstream modulation of the glutamatergic system, discuss related findings with extra-cellular vesicles, and review his lab’s recent single-cell genomic results. COVID-19 Information

Expiration of Cal/OSHA COVID-19 Non-Emergency Standards
Effective Feb. 3, in response to the expiration of the Cal/OSHA non-emergency COVID-19 prevention regulations, UCI Health will no longer require co-workers who test positive for COVID-19 to report their results to Occupational Health. Additionally, contact tracing for routine COVID-19 cases, notification of close contacts, and exposure location reporting are also discontinued.

Co-workers who experience symptoms of COVID-19 or test positive should follow the UCI Health Working Well Guidelines

Please note: These updated state requirements do not change the UCI Health mandatory vaccination program participation policy. Co-workers who are not up-to-date with vaccinations for influenza and COVID-19 are still required to wear masks while on UCI Health premises.
