2023 School of Medicine Faculty Mentoring Awards
Dear Colleagues:

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce the 2023 call for nominations for our four annual awards to recognize excellence and innovation in mentoring at UCI School of Medicine — specifically in the domain of faculty mentoring other faculty (not students). Each awardee will receive $1,000 and a plaque. They will also be interviewed, along with their mentee, by an associate dean about their experience, insights and advice on faculty mentoring. These video interviews will be posted on the SOM Academic Affairs website. Winners’ names will be added to enduring plaques displayed in Irvine Hall.

We are looking for ongoing excellence in mentoring over the past several years, not necessarily restricted to the past 12 months. Submissions from individual mentees or small groups are encouraged. Departments may nominate up to two individuals per category. Nominations from individual mentees/small groups are not counted against the department limits.

1. Innovation in Mentoring Award (2023)
An individual who exemplifies the most current and innovative approaches to mentoring
2. Equity and Diversity in Mentoring Award (2023)
An individual who exemplifies a commitment to equity and diversity in mentoring
3. Basic Science Faculty Mentor of the Year (2023)
An individual who focuses on providing mentorship to basic scientists
4. Clinical Faculty Mentor of the Year (2023)
An individual who focuses on providing mentorship to clinicians or clinician-scientists

Department chair and/or mentee nominations for each award category are due by Friday, March 24, 2023, to Associate Dean Brian Cummings, cummings@hs.uci.edu and Rushi Patel, ruship2@hs.uci.edu.

Nominations should include:
  • An up to one-page letter addressed to Dr. Cummings specifying which of the four awards the candidate is being nominated for and highlighting the nominee’s mentoring efforts over the past several years.
    • Optional: the nominee’s CV, AP-10, or other supporting material.
  • The nominator should also confirm in advance that the nominee is willing to participate in a recorded interview that will be posted on the SOM Academic Affairs website.
Recommendations will be reviewed by the associate deans and awards will be announced in May ahead of an awards ceremony planned for June 2023. We look forward to receiving your nominations.
