Black History Month: Learn with an open mind

The theme of Black History Month, Black Health and Wellness, provides an opportunity to reflect upon how we can foster good health and wellness for our Black communities. As a pediatrician at CHPG Southlands Primary Care in Aurora, Colorado, Dr. Olukemi Akinrinola is passionate about building health and wholeness for her patients and their families.

Dr. Akinrinola was educated in Nigeria and has lived and worked in many communities across the United States. Her diverse background offers a unique understanding of patients and how their past experiences can shape their outcomes and the ways they engage with the health care system.

“I’m usually intentional with every patient but more so with patients who have had poor experiences in the past. I can tell when I have a patient who needs a little more reassurance because they haven’t had the best care or are reluctant to get preventive care like vaccinations,” explained Dr. Akinrinola. “You find that in all races, but you find it more often in minorities.”

We know that Black communities experience significant health disparities in many areas, including higher rates of hypertension, diabetes and stroke, and lower rates for preventive care services such as vaccinations and cancer screening. Understanding these health disparities and the history behind why they exist is key to providing patients with the best possible care.

“We are a product of everything we have been through. Some Black patients are more reluctant to have their children vaccinated. I find myself taking more time with these patients to show the data, validate their experiences and offer reassurances,” Dr. Akinrinola said. “It helps to understand where trust has been broken and the history of why some populations may be more hesitant.”

Our own biases may also factor into the care patients receive or the experience a colleague has within our system. Unconscious (implicit) biases are associations our brain makes outside conscious awareness that lead to an evaluation of a person or group based on characteristics such as race or gender. These associations can lead to unfair judgments and put vulnerable people at a greater disadvantage.

“We all have inherent ideas of how people look and what they are, and this comes out naturally at work. We have to peel that back and always treat everyone with respect. One interaction can make a difference in how someone feels,” she shared.

To create a more diverse and inclusive place to work and receive care, Dr. Akinrinola leaves us with one recommended action: Learn. Learn about history. Learn what Black people feel and experience. Learn with an open mind.

We are recognizing Black History Month throughout February. To learn more, visit our Diversity & Inclusion SharePoint site.

Meet Dr. Akinrinola
Dr. Akinrinola was recently featured in our “I Am” brand awareness campaign. Her story reflects upon the impact we have in our communities outside of a work setting, and with every life we treat in health and wholeness.

Associate Spotlight: Michelle Medina, Manager of Capital and Procurement, Supply Chain

We are 21,000 incredible caregivers on a mission to provide exceptional whole person care – mind, body and spirit. Each of our individual talents, missions and contributions are essential to improving lives and strengthening the communities we serve. Join us for this new series where we get to know one of our fellow caregivers and highlight their unique contributions to our ministry. This month we shine the spotlight on Michelle Medina, Manager of Capital and Procurement, Supply Chain.

What is your personal mission statement?
“Never lose sight of what is most important, live a life of honesty, integrity, and unconditional love.”

How long have you been with Centura Health, and what originally drew you to our shared ministry?
I have been with Centura Health since 2013. I was drawn to Centura by its mission and values, as well as Centura’s many amazing and talented employees. I have gained so much knowledge and developed many amazing friendships with all those I have worked with.

Why do you love working in health care and your current position?
I have always wanted to be a part of caring for people. I was always drawn to caring for those who were ill or could not care for themselves. Working in Supply Chain has given me a great understanding and appreciation for the work we do. Although I am not part of direct patient care, our entire team directly impacts the way patients are cared for by ensuring we are ordering and delivering supplies to care for our patients.

What is a favorite interest you have outside of work?
In the summer I like to go on hikes, and mostly spend time with my two daughters and my grandkids.

Coffee or tea?
Coffee all day every day!

Salty or sweet?
Sweet and salty

Mountains or ocean?
Ocean

Dogs or cats?

Spring, summer, fall or winter?

Join us in thanking Michelle for her dedication to Centura Health, our patients and the communities we serve!

Congressman delivers letters of appreciation for actions during Marshall Fire

Congressional Rep. Joe Neguse hand delivered letters to seven Avista Adventist Hospital leaders for their “bravery and inspirational dedication to protecting our community.”

On his second visit to Avista since the fire, Rep. Neguse, pictured in the center rear in the photo above, delivered letters in binders adorned with the Congressional Seal to Natalie Ingmire, Caroline Fraser, Chris Mailliard, Sharon Robinson, Tonya Teegardin, Laura Hicks and Isaac Sendros. Rep. Neguse represents Louisville, Boulder and other communities in the area.

The letters reflect the appreciation that elected officials and others in the community feel about our Avista caregivers’ dedication during the fire and in the weeks since.

An example of one of the letters reads, in part:

”In the wake of the Marshall Fire, I would like to personally thank you for your bravery and inspirational dedication to protecting our community. I am in awe of your strength and courage amid such a catastrophic event and cannot begin to express my gratitude for all that you have done for your neighbors and friends.

“It is all the first responders and public servants, like yourself, that reaffirm my belief in the resiliency of our community, and my faith that we will get through this together. I am deeply grateful for your service in these particularly trying times.”
