EAP’s Myths and Reality series

Our Profile Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers confidential counseling, work-life services, legal or financial assistance to you and your family members. We don’t want misinformation to keep you from using this valuable resource.

Over the last few weeks, we have shared our Myths and Reality series to address the most common concerns we hear from you – our incredible caregivers – on topics including accessibility, availability, confidentiality, provider and counselor expertise, location, and cost.

This week, we conclude the series with a focus on cost!

Myth: I cannot afford to see a counselor and I do not know how much it costs to use EAP services.

Reality: You have access to 8 no-cost counseling sessions through your EAP services. There is no co-pay or out-of-pocket cost for EAP sessions as long as you use a provider authorized by Profile EAP.

Myth: I have a counselor that I already use, but EAP will not pay for me to see them.

Reality: To access the EAP service, all clients must first register through the Profile EAP 800 number or online registration system. For sessions to be paid, EAP counselors who see our clients must have an authorization from Profile EAP prior to seeing the client. EAP has an open network. If you have a licensed counselor that you are already seeing, you can direct them to our provider relations team who can educate them about how they can become a Profile EAP provider. If they are approved through our vetting process and agree to our rates, they can be used going forward.

Thank you for joining us for this informative series. If you have further questions about EAP services, please reach out using the contact information provided below.

For more information about your EAP benefits, please visit www.ProfileEAP.org and enter company code CENTURA, call 800.645.6571, or email ProfileEAP@Centura.org.

Recognizing Black History Month

Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is demonstrated in our Social Justice Framework, which calls on us to recognize diversity-oriented events. Black History Month is celebrated in February each year and has assigned the celebration an annual theme since the 1970s. This year, the theme of Black History Month is Black Health and Wellness.

We are proud to recognize Black History Month and Black Health and Wellness across our ministry. This theme acknowledges the legacy of Black scholars and medical practitioners and provides an opportunity to reflect upon how we can foster good health and wellness for our Black communities. Learn more about some of the African Americans who are recognized as pioneers in the health care field below:

The first Black American man to earn a medical degree
James McCune Smith, born enslaved in 1813, was the first Black American to earn a medical degree. Sadly, his medical degree was not obtained from an American university since none would admit him. Both Columbia University and Geneva College refused him entrance because of his race. McCune Smith graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1837 having completed his bachelors, masters, and medical degrees in 5 years and at the top of his class. He returned to the United States that same year and established his medical practice in New York. McCune is remembered for his medical care as much as for his role as an abolitionist and his literary works

The first Black female physician in the United States
Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first African American woman to earn an MD. Born in 1831, Crumpler began her caring work early in life, traveling throughout her Pennsylvania town with her aunt to care for sick neighbors. She was admitted into the New England Female Medical College where she obtained her medical degree in 1864. Crumpler was the only African American woman to ever graduate from the college. She began her medical career in Boston before settling in Virginia where she cared for freed slaves who had no other access to care. She also published a book titled Book of Medical Discourses, in 1883, where she shared her experiences as the first African American female doctor in the United States. There are no known surviving images of Dr. Crumpler.

The first African American to earn a professional nursing license
Mary Eliza Mahoney is the first African American to earn a professional nursing license in the United States. Mahoney was born in 1845 and began her nursing work at the New England Hospital for Women and Children while still a teen. No formal nursing training was needed at that time so it was not until 1878, at the age of 33, that she was able to enter the hospital’s newly established nursing school. Mahoney completed the 16-month intensive program in 1879 and was one of only two students who successfully completed the training, out of a cohort of 42 students. This earned her a professional nursing license.

The first Black female doctor certified by the American Board of Pediatrics
Natalia M. Tanner
was the first Black female doctor to be certified by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). Tanner obtained this certification in 1951 from the Illinois chapter of the ABP after being denied certification by the Michigan chapter of the ABP and the Detroit Pediatric Society due to discrimination for her gender and race. Tanner went on to become a professor at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1968. She died on July 14, 2018.

Visit our Diversity & Inclusion SharePoint site and Black History Month page to learn more about Black History Month, health disparities experienced by African Americans, and see what our connected ecosystem is doing to impact the health and wellness of our Black communities. Keep watching for more information and stories throughout Black History Month!

Did you know? February was chosen for Black History Month because it encompasses the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and of Frederick Douglass, an African American hero who was born enslaved, learned to read and write in secret, and ultimately escaped his bondage after enduring many years of profound abuse and suffering. Douglass eventually became an abolitionist and social reformer known for his oratory skills. His speeches and writings have deeply impacted society.

Our continued partnership with National Western

Our exclusive, three-year partnership with National Western kicked off at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) last month. Throughout this relationship, we plan to invest in future generations by promoting youth and community development in agriculture and ranching and bring awareness and development of sustainable solutions to food security in our flourishing communities.

NWSS event recap
The NWSS wrapped up at the end of January and we were proud to be the first ever presenting partner of the legendary 16-day event in Denver.

FarmBox: As part of our ministry-wide initiative to improve food security and access to healthy, affordable foods, our FarmBox was on display throughout the NWSS event.

Beyond the NWSS, our FarmBox has secured a permanent spot at the National Western Center, a 250-acre events campus in Denver, and will operate in conjunction with Focus Points Family Resource Center and their urban agricultural workforce development program, Huerta Urbana. The produce grown within the FarmBox will serve the community surrounding the NWSS in downtown Denver.
Peter D. Banko, President & CEO, presenting donations.

Hunger Action Rodeo: We brought awareness to food security challenges and helped those experiencing hunger every day through our presenting sponsorship of the Hunger Action Rodeo. Alongside the NWSS, we were honored to help provide donations to two hunger action charities and partners following the event.

Our continued partnership
We have several year-round activations planned in partnership with National Western, more details forthcoming.
