EAP’s Myths and Reality series

Our Profile Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers confidential counseling, work-life services, legal or financial assistance to you and your family members. We don’t want misinformation to keep you from using this valuable resource.

Over the coming weeks, we will share our Myths and Reality series to address the most common concerns we hear from you – our incredible caregivers – on topics including accessibility, availability, confidentiality, provider and counselor expertise, location, and cost.

This week we focus on confidentiality!

Myth: I cannot use EAP because I do not want Centura to know my personal information. Don’t counselors share my information with Centura?

Reality: Your information is kept confidential. Neither EAP nor our contracted providers record any information in EPIC. We use our own, separate secured electronic medical records (EMR), EAP Expert. You have access to over 400 licensed counselors in your community who are in the EAP network.

Myth: I will not use Profile EAP because it is not confidential, and my appointments are shared with Centura leadership. My information can also be found in EPIC.

Reality: Profile EAP is a confidential service, all counselors are licensed and therefore must adhere to the guidelines for licensure in the state they practice. No protected health information (PHI) can be shared without your written permission unless there is a danger to self, others, or suspected child or elder abuse. Non-PHI data/numbers are only shared with Centura leadership.

Myth: My counselor (contracted provider), who I am seeing through Profile EAP, told me that Centura is asking her for information about my visit. She feels uncomfortable with sharing my information. I thought it was confidential.

Reality: It can be confusing for contracted providers since Profile EAP is a supported program of Centura. When the contracted counselor states “Centura,” they are miscommunicating the use of the term “Centura.” Centura is not requesting the data. Profile EAP is requesting the data and Profile EAP only asks for limited information from our contract counselors so we can record non-PHI data for reports as well as pay the provider for their services. PHI is never shared with Centura and is not recorded in EPIC.

Myth: I only want a licensed provider and EAP uses interns or individuals with a bachelor’s degree.

Reality: All counselors who provide services for Profile EAP are required to be Master or Doctoral level licensed, experienced counselors and must adhere to the guidelines for licensure in the state they practice. We do not contract with non-licensed, interns or bachelor’s level providers on our panel.

Myth: I have a substance abuse problem that I need help with, but I can’t use EAP because I will get fired.

Reality: Centura does have a self-report provision in their drug free workplace policy. Associates who are struggling with substance abuse are encouraged to call EAP for an assessment and treatment recommendations to get the help they need. If you do self-report, Centura will not be notified.

However, if you are involved in direct patient care (RN, NP, PA, physician) you will be referred to one of the Peer Assistance Services in the state in which you practice (Colorado or Kansas) to determine if it is safe for you to continue to practice while you are undergoing treatment, or if you need to be removed from your duties. Peer Assistance works with you to help you maintain your license in good standing while addressing your substance abuse problem.

Join us next week as we focus on provider and counselor expertise.

For more information about your EAP benefits, please visit www.ProfileEAP.org and enter company code CENTURA, call 800.645.6571, or email ProfileEAP@Centura.org.

American Heart Association recognizes Centura for workplace health achievement

The results of the American Heart Association 2021 Workplace Health Achievement Index were announced in December and Centura is excited to announce that we achieved national Silver Level recognition for taking significant steps to build a culture of health and well-being for our associates and providers.

Centura is one of more than 450 organizations nationwide that completed the Index assessment this year, evaluating the time period of July 31, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Of the organizations that completed the Index assessment, nearly all earned gold (43%), silver (31%) or bronze (19%) status

Inspire Wellbeing, our associate wellbeing program, focuses on supporting your whole health. Check out our variety of program offerings such as meQuilibrium to help you manage stress and build resilience, Telespine for low back or neck pain or sign up for a personal or group challenge to support areas of your wellbeing that are meaningful to you. Get started today!

The American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives for all, created the Index with its CEO Roundtable, a leadership collaborative of more than 45 members from some of America’s largest companies. The Index is a web-based scorecard that evaluates the overall quality and comprehensiveness of a company’s workplace health program through a combination of best practices and a snapshot of a company’s aggregates employee heart health.

Studies show, healthy employees are more productive and use less sick time, and organizations who create a culture of health in the workplace can improve employee retention and organizational reputation.

“We are proud to achieve this recognition from the American Heart Association for prioritizing the health and well-being of our employees,” said Christy Ewing, Enterprise Wellness Program Lead. “Our organization remains committed to supporting the whole health and wellbeing of our amazing caregivers.”

In the new year, the American Heart Association will introduce a reimagined Index, the Workforce Well-Being Scorecard. Building on the legacy of the Workplace Health Achievement Index, the new Scorecard will provide organizations with a way to measure the total health and well-being of their workforce, including the importance of the mental well-being of employees. Participating organizations will receive specific, evidence-informed tools and services to help build and maximize effective cultures of workforce health and well-being.

Together with public, private and non-profit partners, we are leveraging this technology to address immediate food access and root causes of hunger in two ways. First, we are increasing local produce sourcing across our flourishing communities and ministry-wide. Second, we are providing a training opportunity and demonstrating one way communities can build local food production with a limited growing season, space and water.

Review update to Disclosure of PHI to Law Enforcement Policy

If you work in the Emergency Department or you interact with law enforcement as part of your role, you are encouraged to review the latest updates to the Disclosure of PHI to Law Enforcement Policy in PolicyTech.

The policy has been modified for situations where law enforcement has transported/accompanied the patient to a Centura facility and has requested to be notified when the patient is ready to be discharged. For these situations only, we have modified the policy so that Centura caregivers may notify law enforcement when that patient is ready to be discharged, if requested.

This change was made to alleviate challenges front line caregivers have faced, and because we believe this specific activity does not violate the HIPAA Privacy Rule given that law enforcement is already aware of the patient’s identity, they physically brought them to our facility, and we would not be conveying any other PHI about the individual (other than the fact that the patient is ready to be discharged).

However, for situations when law enforcement does not bring/accompany the patient to a Centura facility, we will not make any changes to our policy (e.g., law enforcement calls the facility referring to a patient by name and requests they be called when the patient is soon to be discharged). Centura will not disclose the date, time or place of discharge unless the circumstance meets an allowable exception in the HIPAA Privacy Rule.

Questions?
Please contact Landon Palmer, Group Corporate Responsibility & Privacy Officer, at landonpalmer@centura.org with any questions.
