UC COVID-19 Vaccination Policy Finalized

Dear colleagues,

The University of California Office of the President has issued its final policy regarding required COVID-19 vaccinations, which requires all UC students and employees, including healthcare personnel, to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in order to be physically present at any UC location.

According to UC President Michael V. Drake, MD, the final policy is the product of consultation with UC infectious disease experts and ongoing review of evidence from medical studies concerning the dangerousness of COVID-19 and emerging variants of concern, as well as the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines for preventing infection, hospitalizations, and deaths from COVID-19, and for reducing the spread of this deadly disease.
  • Under the policy, vaccinations for UCI Health personnel must be completed by Sept. 1, 2021.
  • Vaccine exceptions: The policy includes provisions that allow exceptions based on medical exemption, disability, or religious objection.
    • Those who are pregnant are eligible for a deferral for the duration of the pregnancy.
    • Those who apply for and receive an exception will be required to comply with additional safety precautions.
    • Guidelines for seeking exemptions are being finalized and will be shared with all co-workers when available.
  • Those who are in the process of receiving their vaccinations will also be required to comply with the additional safety precautions until they are considered fully vaccinated.
We understand many co-workers will have questions about the application of this policy across the UCI Health system. FAQs for healthcare personnel are being developed will be distributed soon.

Please see the following UCOP resources for additional information:

Co-workers who have received their COVID-19 vaccination through a UCI Health vaccination event or location may access their vaccination from the intranet:
Request green tags for your UCI Health badge to indicate you are vaccinated. If you have been vaccinated but did not receive a green tag, please present your proof of vaccination to the UCI Health Occupational Health office in Pavilion 3.

Together we’ve overcome unprecedented challenges throughout this pandemic and ensured the health and safety of our patients and each other. Timely vaccination remains the best path to minimizing the potential effects of variants and ending this pandemic.
