Focus on Action: Enhancing nursing practice

In April, we launched Focus on Action, a series of focus groups with our incredible nursing associates. These small group sessions are designed to build on the feedback shared in our recent associate engagement survey, providing a forum for us to continue our dialogue about our nurses’ highest priorities and learn more about tangible action we can take to reimagine nursing practice across our connected ecosystem.

To date, our Focus on Action tour has visited Avista Adventist Hospital (AAH), Longmont United Hospital (LUH) and Mercy Regional Medical Center (MRMC). We value the insightful dialogue that has taken place during our sessions at each of these hospitals. While we work to hold Focus on Action sessions across the enterprise, we are also working to take meaningful, thoughtful steps to improve and enhance our nursing practice environment at each facility based on the feedback shared in these conversations.
Common themes and planned action items from AAH, LUH and MRMC Focus on Action include:

As Focus on Action continues, we have scheduled focus groups for the following dates at: We are committed to including every Centura hospital as well as our clinic locations in our Focus on Action tour as it continues throughout the summer and will share additional dates once they are available. More information regarding the Focus on Action sessions at your facility, including specific dates, times and how you can sign up to participate, will be shared by your facility leadership in the coming weeks. We encourage all of our incredible nurses to join us!

In addition to immediate local actions we are taking at each facility based on your feedback, we will hold virtual town halls in the fall to share a summary of what we have heard from you on this listening tour as well as broad plans to address the common themes we are seeing across Centura Health.

Thank you for all you do for our patients, their families and our communities!

Explore possibilities with Microsoft (MS) Teams

MS Teams is the official platform for communication and collaboration at Centura Health. In preparation of Microsoft’s full retirement of Skype for Business in July, Centura is removing the visibility of Skype for Business from computers across the enterprise on Tuesday, June 1. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to open MS Teams and increase your proficiency within the app. During the initial launch you may be prompted to upgrade MS Teams.

MS Teams is a robust collaboration hub that is fully integrated with SharePoint, providing one central location for team members to communicate and collaborate. You can send instant messages, add a SharePoint tab in Teams, create new project sites, share documents and support collaboration across our connected ecosystem. The chat feature in MS Teams will become your only method for sending instant messages starting Tuesday, June 1.

On Tuesday, June 1 Skype for Business will be retired and will no longer auto-launch when you login to a computer. If you attempt to launch Skype after June 1, you will receive one of the following messages:

Click Go to Teams to begin a chat with any associate through MS Teams. Resources are available below to learn more and become comfortable with the chat feature.

Resources are also available within MS Teams under the Learning Pathways icon on the left, along with the resources below to help you navigate and begin utilizing MS Teams chat:

Additional resources are available highlighting the top features and basic how-to guides: Information Technology is committed to delivering new technology to streamline and encourage collaboration and communication to enhance the work you do together to deliver whole person care.

Share your talents with the residents of Porter Place

We know our 21,000 caregivers have many talents and are fueled by a desire to help others. If you’re searching for a way to give back, consider volunteering at Centura Health’s Porter Place!

Porter Place, a residential living center located at 1001 E. Yale Ave. in Denver, offers independent and assisted living options as well as a secure memory care unit.

Centura Health caregivers are invited to share their talents with the residents of Porter Place. This can include storytelling, playing a musical instrument, teaching a skill such as knitting, putting together a puzzle with the residents, or playing a game of pool. Many Porter Place residents love to travel but can no longer do so and would enjoy seeing photos of and learning about your travels or home country. The volunteer opportunities are endless!

If you are interested in sharing your talents with Porter Place, please contact Nancy Maxwell, Porter Place Activities Coordinator, at 303-765-6817 or email NancyMaxwell@Centura.org.

Stroke recovery

Now that you know the signs and symptoms of stroke and available treatments, let’s talk about stroke recovery and the key resources available to support stroke survivors and their care partners.

Stroke recovery
Many individuals who have had a stroke experience long-term muscle weakness (hemiparesis) or loss of movement (hemiplegia) on one side of their body. Survivors may also experience difficulties with swallowing and communication (aphasia). A stroke can contribute to ongoing difficulties participating in leisure activities as well as driving issues, anxiety engaging in sexual relationships or mood disturbances such as depression and fatigue. Regardless of whether it affects movement, swallowing, vision, communication or simply makes the individual tired — continued work toward recovery is important.

A stroke can be very stressful for the individual and their family members. Loved ones should be included in the recovery process. Knowledge of stroke can help family members cope, provide support and help them better care for their loved one. Care partners may also benefit from support groups and education programs. Family members should be considered part of the recovery team as they have an essential role in providing support. In addition, care partners need support, information and training.

Rehabilitation
Rehab is key to stroke recovery. After stroke, individuals may have to relearn certain activities. Stroke rehab helps survivors achieve their best mental and physical function.

Rehab may include:

Emotional challenges
Emotional and behavioral changes after stroke can be difficult. Understanding the effects of stroke can help survivors and care partners improve emotional health over time. Depression is common after having a stroke. Speaking to stroke providers about emotional challenges can help individuals find the best support.

Ways to improve and manage emotional health include:Ways to manage stress include: Stroke support
Stroke is a life-altering experience for patients and their care partners. Stroke support groups provide an avenue to meet others who understand what stroke survivors and their care partners are going through, share experiences and provide support and resources for life after stroke. Some survivors have trouble with social outings and events. Stroke support groups offer a way to connect with others in a low stress environment. Social interactions help to decrease anxiety and depression that can happen after a stroke. Some stroke survivors or caregivers may not be ready to attend a support group right after a stroke. Some find comfort in attending the group right at the beginning of recovery. There is no right or wrong time to attend a stroke support group.

Centura Health hosts many Stroke Support Groups. See below to locate a group near you:
