Emmanuel Rusaka is an analyst in Centura’s IT Service Center. He’s one of the associates who helps out if you’re having computer trouble. Recently, though, he decided he wanted to help solve a very different kind of problem: distrust of COVID-19 vaccines.
”I think the misinformation is quite great and I think that we just have to work together to eliminate that,” he said.
When Emmanuel was invited to receive the vaccine in December, he decided to make a video while getting the shot to show his skeptical family, coworkers, and others in Colorado’s African immigrant communities there is nothing to fear.
”If anything happens to me, don’t go for it. If nothing happens to me, please take your vaccine and protect yourself and others near you. It’s been over two weeks and I’m healthy, no problem.”
Emmanuel grew up in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in central Africa. Many people don’t trust medicine, due partly to civil wars that decimated the health care system. That fear has led many to die from disease, including viruses like Ebola.
Conflict led Emmanuel’s family to leave the DRC for Kenya, where he studied business and information technology. What eventually led him to the US, though, was interest in health care. Three years after migrating to America, he visited a job fair and applied to work for Centura Health.
“I’ve developed a passion for health care. My mother was a victim of counterfeit drugs in 2009,” and they made her very sick. Ever since he has wanted to help spread truth. Now he’s pursuing a master’s in health management at DU.
In the video, Emmanuel encourages others to get the vaccine while speaking three foreign languages—French, Swahili and a regional DRC dialect—that are spoken in some of the African countries that are represented in metro Denver. He made the video “to give hope to those who are feeling scared of taking [the vaccine]. I took it, and I’m alive.”
“I know people are saying, ‘Oh, it's so fast, vaccines take years to be developed.’ Scientists are working day and night to come up with a solution to this virus. It pains me when there is false information that gives people fear instead of courage.”
”So I feel like we really need to trust our system, we need to trust the process and be able to give it a chance to protect us. Let's do this for the sake of humanity, and let's get over it and go back to our normal lives.”

Clairvia, where clinicians build, edit and view schedules, will be upgraded on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. (1800) MT. All Clairvia users must exit and remain out of the Clairvia application until the planned downtime is complete at approximately 10 p.m. (2200) MT. The average downtime is 4 hours, and a communication will be sent when the application is once again available for use.
As we continue to improve our scheduling and timekeeping system, it is necessary to maintain the existing Clairvia scheduling system for our clinicians until we can roll out Advanced Scheduling in Workforce Dimensions (WFD), expected in 2021. Upon completion of the Jan. 19 upgrade, Clairvia will be equipped with greater stability, improved performance and reduced security risks. Additionally, with this upgrade, the following web browsers will support Clairvia: Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari.
This upgrade is part of our planning and commitment to enhancing and streamlining the user experience. Continue watching for future updates, and we encourage you to share your feedback as we continue working to optimize timekeeping and scheduling for our people. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support and collaboration.
Questions?
If you have any questions regarding this upgrade, please contact your designated Super Users for all Clairvia questions, issues, security permissions and training needs.
Interested in engaging with and helping our new nurse residents along on their professional journey? Consider becoming a mentor for our next twelve-month program starting in February.
Centura is looking for 50-75 nurses to become mentors. Any Centura registered nurse can apply. You must have at least one year of experience and be in good employment standing. Once you sign up on the platform, an approval will be sent to your supervisor for final verification. With your supervisor's approval you can then complete your mentor profile and will receive access to the mentor lab online training program, consisting of four one-hour sessions, which you can complete at your own pace on your time. Mentor pairs are matched electronically and then meet monthly, either in person or virtually, for an hour to an hour and a half over the span of 12 months.
If you are interested, complete this form, or for more information, we invite you to email us at mentoring@Centura.org.
Enabling associate career development is a top priority as we continue our journey to become a true system of choice for our associates, physicians and our communities.
