Update from Dean Johnson and the Owen COVID-19 Taskforce |
It has been a challenging two weeks. We want to remind everyone in our community to take care of yourself and take care of each other. Get outside, stretch, and take care of your mental and physical health. The Owen community continues to work to support one another and support the academic mission of the school. Thank you to everyone for their part in coming together during this time.
Sunday we will resume “What’s Happening." Please submit any information that's need to be included through one of the two following links: submissions for students; submissions for faculty & staff. |

Student Information (Community-Wide Update) |
Dean Johnson addressed the faculty and staff in a town hall this morning. Next week, we will host live sessions with students; watch for an email with details.
Last night, you received a survey asking about your experience with the first week of remote delivery of Owen courses. We understand there was some technical difficulty. If you were not able to complete the survey, please try again. Feedback will help us identify ways to improve teaching and learning. Your input is valued and appreciated.
The University has announced a Student Hardship Fund. You can find more information at https://www.vanderbilt.edu/coronavirus/faq/#adjustments-and-student-hardship-fund, and the application for the student hardship fund can be found at https://www.vanderbilt.edu/financialaid/hardship/index.php |

Library Updates (Community-wide Update) |
Vanderbilt Libraries are providing robust remote services and access for our faculty and students during these extraordinary times. Use is up 25%, the Live Chat is buzzing, thousands of new e-resources have been added as publishers open access and librarians purchase materials needed for classes, nearly 1000 document delivery requests have been scanned and sent in the past 10 days, and the website has welcomed over 217,000 visitors since classes went online. Over 95% of library services are now remote.
We have also been keeping several libraries open with small staffs and restricted access: Central/Divinity, Law, Management, and Eskind Biomedical. Keeping university libraries open—even for restricted patron access—is no longer the norm among our peers. At Vanderbilt, we want to offer a place of refuge and study for students and faculty who need such a place, but in the interest of protecting everyone (including Library staff who are in “at risk” groups), we have decided, in consultation with the Deans of each college, to reduce our “in person” services.
The Libraries below will now operate as “Open Study Spaces” (with plentiful social distancing signage) during the hours listed. A few staff members and a security guard will monitor the buildings. 100% of library services and access will be delivered remotely. Interlibrary loan/document delivery continues on a purely digital basis and we are able to provide just about any text thanks to the lifting of many restrictions.
Open Study Spaces
Central/Divinity (restricted to VU card access): 8:00am to 5:00pm, M-F Law and Management (restricted to their constituents only): 8:00am to 5:00pm, M-F Eskind Library (restricted to VU/VUMC medical/nursing staff, faculty, and students): 7:30am to 6:00pm M-F Let’s be clear: all library services are still available through the web page, and we have been completely successful in maintaining them. In short, this is a temporary change in structure but not in service.
Thank you,
Valerie Hotchkiss and John Sloop
