Why Diversity, Equity and Inclusion?
By Carlene Campbell, Executive Assistant to the President and CEO, and Member of the USRA Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

A meaningful policy of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) benefits everyone. There are no winners and losers. It is helpful in this context to consider the African philosophy of “ubuntu” — a concept in which your sense of self is shaped by your relationships with other people. It’s a way of living that begins with the premise that “I am” only because “we are.” In relationship to our situation at USRA, our success is predicated on treating all current and potential future employees in a manner that reflects a positive effort to shape decisions around a policy of equity and inclusiveness.

I am a Black woman who was born in Jamaica but also shaped by the experiences of over 30 years of living in England and the USA. The history and the legacy of Black people in the USA have never failed to inform my views of the challenges faced by minorities in the USA. Yet I never forget about the numerous examples of the contributions that each group within our society has made to the success of the businesses and corporations that have built our great country. Unfortunately, even with the success stories, there are too many people like me who have been overlooked or deliberately denied the chance to make our best contribution.

Employee Referral Program
It’s a win-win-win. USRA fills a position with an excellent candidate and you get a bonus AND maybe you’ve also helped to match a friend with a great new role. Reward amounts are based upon tiers, and tiers are established based on factors such as time to fill positions and the need to fill a job quickly. The tier of a position and eligibility in the program are detailed in the ADP Employee Referral module. Also, YOU can review and apply to jobs at any time on the USRA careers page. If you have questions, please reach hroperations@usra.edu.

Recognition
USRA Launches Bonusly For Everyday Contributions
USRA has a new on-line recognition program – Bonusly! Using Bonusly, employees and managers can recognize a job well done, then give and/or receive small USRA Awards to celebrate success in real time. Additionally, you can add a comment, gif or emoji to keep the recognition going.

With Bonusly, all employees and managers can publicly recognize their peers, team members, or any other staff and/or manager by giving recognition in award amounts smaller than Spot Awards.  These smaller awards add up to meaningful recognition.

We are excited with the utilization in the first several weeks, so if you have not yet done so, log into Bonusly and join the fun:  USRA BONUSLY Using your usra.edu extension, you should have immediate single sign-on.

Should you have any questions send an email to Bonusly Program

Congratulations on Your Promotion!
Several different USRA programs and organizations have recognized the focus and dedication of people by being promoted to the next level in their careers. Please join us in congratulating our colleagues on their achievements.

USRA Scientist Leads Integration of Satellite Air Quality Data into USEPA's "AirNow" System
Until recently, particulate matter (smoke and dust in air resulting from fires) data collection has been mostly performed via ground-based monitoring. And the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) “AirNow” program at airnow.gov is the primary source of air quality information accessed by researchers, weather forecasters, and the public. Gaps in the spatial coverage and resolution of ground-based monitors make it difficult to produce accurate and accessible real-time data across the entire country.
