Conference Highlight by Bill Meyer
Microgravity Research for the 21st Century
This year the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) held their annual meeting 3-6 November in Baltimore, Maryland. The ASGSR is a nonprofit organization that represents the sciences focusing on the understanding of responses of biological and physical systems to gravity conditions. With COVID-19 protocols in place (masks required during the meeting and the request that all attendees be fully vaccinated), the attendance matched that of the previous in-person annual meeting two years ago. USRA Senior Fellow Dr. William Meyer was on the ASGSR conference organizing committee, Governing Board, and Chaired the ASGSR STEAM Board Meeting.

Publication Highlight by Raj Prabhu
A "Brainy" Book
Dr. Raj Prabhu co-edited a recently published book, Multiscale Biomechanical Modeling of the Brain, that describes the application of computer modeling approaches to study traumatic injuries to the human brain. The computer modeling approaches use a multiscale biomechanical approach called integrated computational biomedical modeling (ICBM), in which traumatic brain injuries are studied at the various features of the brain (sub-cellular neuron membrane, cellular neuron, grey and white matter, and the brain organ). Simulation results can be used to assist in designing head safety and protective measures.

A Stellar Merger's Snapshot in Time
Eleven years after it was last observed and 17 years after a stellar merger occurred, SOFIA looked at V838 Monocerotis, or V838 Mon, a binary star system about 19 thousand light-years away from Earth, capturing a snapshot in time of its makeup.
