Unconscious Bias in Hiring, Evaluations, and Promotions
By Joan Schmelz, Director of the Science and Technology Institute, Director of the NASA Postdoctoral Program, and Chair of the USRA Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

We all have biases, and we are (for the most part) unaware of them. Unconscious bias is not discrimination and not prejudice. In fact, men and women both unconsciously devalue the contributions of women; whites and people of color both unconsciously devalue the contributions of people of color. This can have a detrimental effect on grant proposals, job applications, and performance reviews.

Vaccine Policy
Five Steps within Five Minutes
In an October 19 email, Eric Weaver, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, explained that a new policy requires all USRA employees, and certain other individuals, to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 pandemic and must submit proof of vaccination as soon as possible - no later than Wednesday, November 24, 2021. It should take less than five minutes to complete the five easy steps: from downloading the App to logging out.

Also, don’t forget your flu shot to help keep yourself and others healthy this season too!

Is Your Compliance Training Up-to-Date?
Your performance review process probably asked you if you’ve completed required compliance trainings. If you have past due compliance trainings, they will appear at the top of your screen when you login (with your USRA email only) to ULearn. If you want to review past completed trainings go to the top right menu and click on [your name]> click on Compliance > click on [your name] in the top right again > click on Training History. Contact Anne Nakaar or Angie Quaranta for questions.
