| Lisa Gibbs, MD | | Greetings from a thriving and very busy UCI Department of Family Medicine!
After a very successful match, we look forward to welcoming our UCI Family Medicine Resident class of 2027 in July-10 new medical school graduates from across the country! From our own School of Medicine, five of UCI’s medical students have matched in Family Medicine programs, a testament to our own faculty who teach the depth and breadth of Family Medicine as we serve as role models and mentors to all medical students.

Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology | | The Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology continues to build upon our mission to: Discover. Teach. Heal., and meet the needs of Orange County’s growing older adult population.
The Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology and UCI’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts were brought together by the Orange County Philharmonic to work with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in January for the West Coast’s first demonstration of Strokestra. Patients and professional musicians participated in the interactive workshop using musical instruments for rehabilitation. Strokestra, created over 10 years ago by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, is designed to help stroke survivors improve movement and build confidence. The program was attended by students from UCI’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts and faculty from the nursing and medical school.

| If years had a theme, transition would be this one!
New ACGME requirements, a new program director, and a new associate program director. Both of our associate program directors welcomed new members to their family this year, all under the umbrella of a new chair of the department. While our bar for success was set at "don't let the residency explode," finding ourselves thriving now is a welcomed outcome, the responsibility of which can be clearly linked to the support of individuals like Lily, Mine, Chris, Matteo, Betzy, and Lisa.

FQHC News | UCI Health Family Health Centers - Anaheim and Santa Ana |
| The UCI Health Family Health Center (FQHC) continues to expand care Orange County communities. For the fifth consecutive year, we have grown. In 2023, our annual Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Uniform Data Set (UDS) report identified we grew by ~1000 more unique patients, serving 27,927 individuals. Most of our patients continue to live within federally poverty levels; predominantly identify as Hispanic; and approximately two thirds of our patients served are children.
The UDS report also presents our clinical quality metrics which comprises both preventative and chronic disease measures. In reviewing these data, we surpassed the national and California benchmarks from 2022. This accomplishment could not have been done without the collaboration with numerous Schools (Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy), staff clinicians, and other care team members. In addition, the success has also been supported by the FQHC population health team. This team is composed of a health educator, MAs, and an RN. They proactively outreach patients who require follow up on various metrics and will closely monitor to ensure they have close follow up if indicated.

Medical Humanities | Medical Humanities and Arts Program (MHAP) |
| The integration of art and care was a highlight of MHAP during the fall and winter of 2023-24. February Schwartz Rounds for Compassionate Care featured multiple Family Medicine faculty, clinicians, and residents sharing their work on Art and Healing.
Dr. Tan Nguyen discussed his work on engaging patients in poetry and drawing. Dr. Shannon Melcher, former UCI FM Resident and current Clinician at UCI Tustin, shared her art of quilting and its importance in connecting with family and friends as part of her wellness. Dr. Andrew Gallardo (FM, R2) shared how creating art was something that gave him and other residents a collaborative creative space, reminding them that they collectively were watching over patients and each other (the artwork in this month’s photo is Dr. Gallardo’s). Finally, Dr. Rajaram (palliative care) shared how poetry has supported him in navigating challenging moments throughout his career. It was a transformative moment to share the important role of art in medicine with the UCI Health community.
