Message from the Chair
Greetings,

As the articles in this newsletter reveal, UCI Family Medicine is thriving due to the talented faculty that make up our department.

One common thread in this newsletter is our dedication to teaching future healthcare professionals.  We excel in our mission to train future Family Medicine physicians, and we are also a conduit, or ‘pipeline’ for undergraduate students in HELIOS (John Billimek, PhD), medical, nursing, social work and pharmacy students, and, since the COVID epidemic, nursing assistants in nursing home throughout the state.  The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine report that primary care is the “common good”, associated with” improved population health and equitable health outcomes” (Implementing High-Quality Primary Care, May 2021). And yet, we have a very serious shortage.  We save lives and improve communities, not in a dramatic way, but in a quiet, earnest, and unwavering manner. We are the wind beneath the wings of successful equitable healthcare systems.

Residency News
Welcome to November! Interviews are upon us; we have filled our interview slots with a bevy of quality candidates. New to this year, applicants are able to “signal” a residency to indicate their interest. We have exhaustively looked over 400 applicants and provided over 160 interview slots through a small expansion of the number of interview days. This is a huge undertaking to interview all the applicants, and we are extremely appreciative of the work that everyone puts into the process. A reminder to look at your Outlook calendar invite for instructions on the interview day.

FQHC News
UCI Health Family Health Centers - Anaheim and Santa Ana
The UCI Health Family Health Center (FQHC) continues to serve the under-supportive communities of Orange County.  In August 2023, we learned that our FQHC once again achieved high quality benchmarks. We surpassed the national average in 14 out 18 measures!  This accomplishment could not have been done without the collaboration with numerous Schools (Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy), staff clinicians, and other care team members.  In addition, the success has also been supported by the FQHC population health team.  This team is comprised of a health educator, MAs, and an RN.  They proactively outreach patients who require follow up on various metrics and will closely monitor to ensure they have close follow up if indicated.

Medical Humanities
Medical Humanities and Arts Program (MHAP) - “mapping our engagement with medicine and life.”
MHAP has been busy over the past six months, launching the 2023 issue of Plexus, launching new courses, receiving awards, presenting at professional meetings, publications, and more.

To celebrate the return of Plexus in print form and the Medical Student Art Exhibit, we hosted the Medical Humanities & Arts Symposium in May. This event featured poets and artists who were published in the 2023 “Identity” issue of Plexus and medical student artists who submitted their creative work for the Art Exhibit. The symposium organizers, Celina Yang (GR2), Kenneth Schmitt (MS4), Ashley Hope (MS4), Jennifer Tan (MS2), and Olamide Sonuga (MS3) created an atmosphere where artists and audience could interact, share their creativity and experiences. This will be an annual event, and we hope you will join us in 2024 when we celebrate the 25th publication of Plexus.

Medical Education
Medical Education Updates
Faculty in the department are involved in various aspects of medical education. This year, the education is reaching beyond our FM clinics and School of Medicine. Drs. Dylan Hanami, Tan Nguyen and Bao-Tran Vo joined faculty across the state in teaching the Procedure and Ultrasound POC to medical students and residents at the inaugural CAFP POP conference held in Costa Mesa, CA this past summer. UCI School of Medicine was the school with the most medical students attended, and the students were rewarded with a prize for their enthusiastic participation. This is a testimonial to the increased interest in Family Medicine.

Sports Medicine
The Primary Care Sports Medicine service continues to thrive. In addition to clinical services at UCI Health sites in the Gottschalk Plaza, Pavilion 3 Orthopedics, Newport Center, and FHC-Santa Ana, we have recently opened operations at UCI Health-Tustin. We are currently making final preparations to move the Gottschalk practice to its new home in the Wen Center for Advanced Care in 2024 as part of a larger collaborative clinical service alongside musculoskeletal clinical services.

Culinary Training Prepares Faculty to Prescribe Food as Medicine
Faculty Highlights

Ask your doctor how much nutrition education they received during their medical training and you’re apt to be surprised by what you learn. Not all medical schools offer dedicated nutrition courses.

UCI Health is one of more than 60 academic institutions to adopt the Health meets Food curriculum, administered by George Washington University, for medical student and resident training. It is offered through a collaboration between the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and UCI School of Medicine.

This past year, faculty were offered the opportunity to fill their nutrition education gap with an adaptation of the curriculum focused on their needs.
