Funding Opportunities

Call for Proposals: Moore Inventors Fellows Program
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Moore Inventor Fellows Program seeks to identify outstanding inventors and innovators who harness science and technology to enhance the conduct of scientific research, strengthen environmental conservation, or improve the experience and outcomes of patient care.

The scope of this call is intentionally wide: proposed projects do not need to fall within Moore’s current funding priorities but should be broadly within the program areas of foundation interest (science, environmental conservation and patient care). The exception is for nominees proposing ideas and inventions that target patient care, where Moore seeks overlap with their current emphasis on improving the experience and outcomes of patients, including solutions in the areas of diagnostic excellence, medication safety in the community and community-based serious illness care.

Moore aims to support inventions at an early stage that could lead to proof-of-concept work on an invention or advance an existing prototype that tackles an important problem. The foundation seeks innovations with the promise of making a long-lasting impact by addressing underlying problems in their field, but a clear path toward commercialization is not a requirement. Moore is not interested in supporting projects that are already at a stage where significant venture capital is available.

Each fellow will receive funding for three years at a level of $200,000 per year from the Moore Foundation. In addition to funds for the fellow, the foundation will provide the host institution with $25,000 each year to cover costs associated with administering the grant award, resulting in a total three-year award amount of $675,000. Host institutions will be required to make a contribution of $50,000 in annual direct support of the inventor’s work (i.e., mandatory cost share) which has been arranged with the Office of Research and Beall Applied Innovation.

Candidates must be within 10 years of receiving the advanced terminal degree in their field (MS, PhD or MD received on or after 2014). They can be tenure-line faculty, teaching faculty, research scientists, post-docs or other full-time affiliates of the university.

UCI may submit only two nominations for this award opportunity. Therefore, interested applicants are asked to submit a preliminary application to the Office of Research (via UCI Review) by Sept. 25, 2023.

Preliminary Review Deadline: Monday, Sept. 25, 2023

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Research Supplements to Promote Re-Entry, Re-integration into, and Re-training in Health-Related Research Careers (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (NOT-OD-23-170)
The goal of this NOSI is to provide information to the extramural community regarding an administrative supplement to provide full or part-time mentored research training experiences for individuals with high potential to re-enter, re-integrate into, or re-train in an active research career after an interruption for family responsibilities or other qualifying circumstances as described in the NOSI. The supplement grants are intended to provide these scientists with an opportunity to update or extend their research skills and knowledge and prepare them to re-establish or revitalize their careers in basic biomedical, behavioral, clinical, translational, or social science research. It is anticipated that by the completion of the supplement support period, the awardee will be prepared to apply for a fellowship (F), career development (K) award, a research award (R), SBIR/STTR, or other types of independent research support. View the NOSI.

Deadline: Monday, Oct. 9, 2023
Expiration Date: Oct. 9, 2026

Postdoctoral Funding Opportunity! A.P. Giannini Foundation Fellowship
The A.P. Giannini Foundation invites physician-scientists and junior researchers with 3 to 36 months of postdoctoral research experience (as of Dec. 31, 2023) to apply to the 2024 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship & Leadership Award.

The Fellowship and Leadership Award supports innovative research in the basic sciences and applied fields and trains fellows to become established investigators and to pursue scientific leadership positions in academia, industry, public and non-traditional career pathways. Research projects should advance the translation of biomedical science into preventions, treatments and cures for human diseases. Applicants with tenure-track research positions or faculty appointments are ineligible.

Fellows receive a competitive stipend for their research training. Candidates may be eligible to obtain additional salary support from their sponsoring institution. Fellows cannot concurrently hold a full fellowship from another source or a federally funded career development award. Fellows receive leadership training and support to maximize their postdoctoral experience. Fellows participate in workshops and receive one-on-one coaching to foster their communication and leadership skills. The Foundation requires that fellows participate in the Leadership Program.

For questions about the application process, reach out to Dr. Leslie Thompson (lmthomps@hs.uci.edu).

ICTS Workshop: Responsible Conduct of Research
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) is increasingly viewed as an essential component of training, regardless of a researcher's source of funding. NIH requires RCR training that involves at least 8 contact hours between participants and faculty. Instruction must be undertaken at least once during each career stage, and at a frequency of no less than once every four years. To meet the NIH requirement, the Institute of Clinical and Translational Science in partnership with the Office of Research will be hosting a full in-person workshop in October:

What kind of grant support does the Research Development Unit (RDU) provide?

Are you considering applying for Limited Funding Opportunities?
In most cases, interested applicants submit a pre-proposal to the Office of Research where a committee reviews all submissions and makes a recommendation to the Vice Chancellor for Research about which proposal should go forward from UCI. Limited opportunities are advertised on fundopp.uci.edu with a link to apply. However, if you do not see a limited opportunity listed, please contact the Research Development Unit. We can relay your application plans to the UCI Office of Research so they are aware of the number of interested PIs/units on campus and, if necessary, coordinate PIs or create a review process.

Intramural & Foundation Funding Opportunities Lists
The Research Development Unit (RDU) has created lists of intramural funding opportunities and foundation funding opportunities. If you have additional opportunities that should be included, please do not hesitate to email at somrd@hs.uci.edu.
