| Call for Cancer Research Proposals | The UCI Cancer Research Institute is pleased to announce that funds are available through the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant. This institutional grant will fund several proposals for one year at a level up to $45,000 per award. All eligible faculty from each school at the University of California, Irvine are encouraged to apply, so long as the proposal has a clear link to some aspect of cancer research. The purpose of the seed grants is to provide pilot funds for research in both basic and clinical cancer-related problems.
Eligibility: Investigators within the first SIX years of their first independent faculty position and in the following series are eligible: In Line, In Residence, Adjunct, Clinical-X, Clinical and Researcher. Awardees may not hold a competitive grant from a national agency (e.g. NIH, ACS etc.) or be a previous recipient of an ACS-IRG seed grant. | Call for Proposals: Harold S. Geneen Charitable Trust Awards Program for Coronary Heart Disease Research | The Harold S. Geneen Charitable Trust Awards Program for Coronary Heart Disease Research supports research in the area of coronary heart disease or circulatory failure prevention and improving care for these patients. The program focuses on basic and translational scientific research. Clinical studies are currently ineligible. Applications examining the intersection of coronary heart disease and/or congestive heart failure and COVID-19 or similar viral illnesses are highly encouraged to apply.
UCI is one of only 14 institutions invited to participate in this program; three grants of $275,000/2 years ($150,000 in Year 1, and $125,000 in Year 2), will be awarded. All full-time faculty with combined federal and non-federal funding totaling $500,000 or less are eligible, and junior faculty are encouraged to apply. UCI may nominate only one candidate. Interested applicants may submit a preliminary application via the UCI Review system.

| Seed Funding Opportunity | The UCI Conte Center is soliciting applications for up to four grants. Each grant will be funded up to $30,000 for innovative basic and translational research projects focusing on brain plasticity, including how experiences may influence the brain and thus contribute to vulnerability to cognitive and mental illness.
We are seeking studies employing innovative concepts and/or cutting-edge methods. Proposals may involve human subjects or animal models or both. Projects employing molecular (including epigenetics and bioinformatics), cellular, circuit / systems or functional/behavioral in vivo approaches, in vivo imaging, or computational / modeling strategies and multidisciplinary approaches are welcome. Projects will be judged based on their significance, innovation and relevance to the goals of the UCI Conte Center. A few relevant key words: Unpredictable experiences, early-life adversity, the QUIC, anhedonia, brain circuit maturation, plasticity, learning and memory, emotional vulnerabilities. Applications will undergo review by a committee consisting of external referees and Center members. Awardees will be announced by July 1, 2023. Funds are for a one-year period. Requests may be for any amount up to and not exceeding $30,000. Awardees will provide a six-month interim report and a twelve-month final report. PI(s) will present their project and data to members of the Conte Center as well as participate in the Conte Center Annual Symposium. | Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program (TBIPH) funding announcements | The Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program (TBIPHRP) is part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The TBIPHRP has released five funding announcements for FY23. The TBIPHRP anticipates funding approximately 70 awards ranging from $500k total direct costs up to $5M total direct costs. | Michelson Next Gen Grants in Human Immunology (early career) | The 2023 Michelson Prizes are looking for research aimed at tackling the current roadblocks that exist in human vaccine development and expanding our limited understanding of key immune processes that are fundamental to successful vaccine and immunotherapy development. Reviewers will be looking for research that is highly innovative and impactful, with the potential to be applied across many diseases. The $150,000 Michelson Prizes are awarded annually to support early-career investigators working to advance human immunology, vaccine discovery and immunotherapy research for major global diseases. | Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science and Design | The Vilcek Foundation will award three prizes of $50,000 each to young biomedical scientists born outside of the US to non-American parents and who demonstrate outstanding early achievement. Eligible work may be in basic, applied, and/or translational biomedical science. Criteria for selection include demonstrated exceptional independence and creativity, and an ability to communicate the significance of their research to a general scientifically literate audience. Eligibility: Applicants must have been born outside the United States and be no more than 38 years old (born after January 1, 1985). All applicants must have earned a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent), intend to pursue a professional career in the United States, and hold a full-time position at an academic institution or other organization. | Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI): Collaborative Pairs Pilot Project Awards in Neurodegeneration and Neuroscience | The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) invites letters of intent for the Collaborative Pairs Pilot Project Awards to support pairs of investigators and their teams to explore innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to address critical challenges in the neurodegenerative disease field and in areas of fundamental neuroscience such as the cellular, molecular and circuit mechanisms of cognition & memory and the neuroscience of sleep.
Awards are $200,000 in total costs per collaborating pair for a period of 18 months, after which successful projects will be eligible to apply for additional four-year acceleration grants that build on pilot phase studies. Collaborative Pairs teams will benefit from the support, mentoring and collaborative interactions of the CZI Neurodegeneration Challenge Network, as well as interactions with the broader CZ Science programs and grantee network.
Eligibility: Pairs from different institutions strongly encouraged; must not have received any funding previously to work together. At least one member of the pair must be early career (hired after June 22, 2017) or mid career (hired between June 22, 2013 and June 22, 2017). | Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Alzheimer’s-Focused Administrative Supplements for NIH Grants that are Not Focused on Alzheimer’s Disease | The participating Institutes and Centers (ICs) are inviting applications to expand existing awards that are not currently focused on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its related dementias (ADRD) (e.g., frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID), and multiple etiology dementias) to allow the research to develop such a focus. Active awards with project end dates in FY 2025 or later are eligible. The award may not be in a terminal no-cost extension or going into a no-cost extension in FY 2024. Please note that a few ICs limit no-cost extensions in the final non-competing year of an award. For that reason, it is important to contact staff at the IC supporting the award when planning the request.
As administrative supplements, the work proposed needs to be within the scope of the research or training that is already supported. Center awards and resource awards are most likely to be able to justify these supplements, as they tend to have a broad content scope. Some research grants will also qualify if the current research is on a related topic (e.g., cognitive decline in aging, caregiving, the biology of neurodegeneration, genetics, imaging, computational methods, pain perception, or biostatistical tools that have application to research on AD/ADRD). NIA hosts a website that provides details on how AD/ADRD is defined and some examples of currently supported research. Awardees are expected to seek competing support to continue promising leads from the research supported through the supplement. Awards that currently focus on research on AD/ADRD are not eligible for this program. If an investigator is uncertain whether the project does carry an AD focus, as defined by NIH, then the investigator should contact the appropriate Program Officer who can check that status. (For example, the parent award may focus on cognitive change due to chemotherapy in cancer patients. Does that research have a current focus on AD/ADRD? Contact the program officer for the award to check its status.)

| CHOC Research Education: Cerner Real-World Data for Multicenter Research and Related Infrastructures with Louis Ehwerhemuepha, PhD | Cerner Real-World Data™ (CRWD) is designed to help users answer deep and complex research questions using data from multiple health systems and heterogenous patient groups. It reduces bias in research that may be inherent in single center studies, and it provides larger sample sizes for rare diseases/conditions. It also ensures that most conditions can be modeled using machine learning on structured EHR data. With this longitudinal database, researchers can analyze detailed sets of de-identified clinical data at the patient and encounter levels, and develop statistical and machine learning models that may be implementable in various healthcare settings.

Over the past 15 years, the Ances Bioimaging Laboratory (ABL) has focused on developing novel biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases including HIV associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), autoimmune encephalitis, and Down syndrome. | NCI Drug Development Workshop II: Specialized Topics in Preclinical Development of Small Molecule Cancer Drugs | This workshop will encompass a series of six webinar-based lectures. They will address specialized topics that are important for the preclinical development of small molecule cancer drugs. The intention is to help investigators mitigate the translational risk of selected candidates during their later stages of product development and increase the chances of entering clinical evaluation. The intended audience is translational scientists who are interested in preclinical development of cancer drugs. Junior faculty, staff and trainees are encouraged to attend this workshop. | NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy Resources | NIH has released a new Data Management and Sharing Policy, effective Jan. 25, 2023, which requires the submission of a Data Management and Sharing Plan as part of all proposals for research that will generate scientific data. The NIH expects that the data generated will be shared broadly at the conclusion of the research. Researchers should plan now for the rollout of these requirements and develop Data Management and Sharing Plans that meet NIH expectations.

| COVID-19 Reminders | With California’s COVID-19 state of emergency having ended on February 28, 2023, employees and students are reminded to continue to report their COVID-19 cases to Contact Tracing and Vaccine Navigation Services, which continues to investigate and contact trace cases. Free face coverings and antigen tests continue to be available on campus.
Please note that the end of the emergency does not mean the end of COVID-19, so individuals should continue to gauge their risk and take steps to protect themselves and their communities by staying up to date with vaccinations and boosters, staying home if sick, testing, washing hands and wearing masks when appropriate.
