UCI School of Medicine: Discover, Teach and Heal
Dear Colleagues,

We are happy to announce that Richard Harris, PhD, has officially joined the UCI Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute as the newest Samueli Endowed Chair, and the UCI School of Medicine as professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care.

Dr. Harris joins us from the University of Michigan where he was previously a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Rheumatology.

His background is in basic science and clinical research in alternative medicine. He received his Bachelor of Science in genetics from Purdue University in 1992 and his PhD in molecular and cellular biology from UC Berkeley in 1997. Dr. Harris is also a graduate of the Maryland Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has received an MS in clinical research design and statistical analysis at the University of Michigan. He is the co-president of the Society for Acupuncture Research and a member of the advisory council for the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

Dr. Harris is currently investigating the neurobiological mechanisms of both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic (acupuncture/acupressure) treatments for chronic pain and fatigue conditions. His recent investigations have focused on the role of brain neurotransmitters and their receptors in humans with chronic pain, and he will continue his research at UCI.

Dr. Harris and his family are in the process of relocating to Southern California, and we look forward to working with him and welcome his depth of knowledge and experience in research and education in integrative health.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Harris!

Sincerely,
