Call for applications: Robert & Sylvia Mapel Research Innovation Award
The UCI School of Medicine is pleased to announce a 2023 call for applications for the Robert & Sylvia Mapel Research Innovation Award. This award is aimed at promoting the early exploration of high-risk research ideas focused on emerging areas of basic and applied biomedical science. Funding will support one $40,000 grant to a PhD mentor and PhD student team of UCI School of Medicine-based researchers. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 17, 2023 by 5 p.m. Funding will be distributed by the UCI School of Medicine Office of Research.

The Robert & Sylvia Mapel Research Innovation Endowment supports groundbreaking research of a PhD mentor and PhD student team in the areas of biomedical and translational sciences. Research that seeks to establish new paradigms, develop innovative new technology and/or methodology, remove roadblocks that restrict progress in a field, or answer intractable problems, is given priority. This program is intended to develop research in any biomedical area that requires preliminary data necessary to compete for extramural funding, NIH funding in particular.

General Requirements:
  • Applicants must be full time UCI faculty with a primary appointment in the School of Medicine.
  • Performance period should be 12 months, with an approximate start date of March 20, 2023.
The application should include:
  • A three-page project description, including aims, scientific premise, significance and future plans to pursue extramural funding. The description should also address:
    • What will be the key scientific outcomes and impacts of the proposed work?
    • What significant aspects of this proposal are innovative?
    • What are milestones for the pursuit of extra-mural funding during the funded period and following year?
  • An up to one-page description of the training goals for the PhD student.
  • An up to one-page budget and budget justification.
    • Funds can be used for PhD student stipends and tuition, supplies, equipment, but not for travel or faculty salaries.
  • Other funding.
    • Include a listing of sources, topic, and amount of other current funding. This program is for new projects. Proposals to augment funding for existing funded projects will NOT be reviewed. Explain any possible overlap with existing funding.
  • Biographical sketch for the PI (in either the National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).
  • Biographical sketch for PhD student (in either the National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).
Evaluation Criteria:
Applications will be judged competitively based on the likelihood that the proposed research plan and scope of work will result in robust preliminary data to support strong proposals for extramural funding. Other important considerations include the strength of the PhD mentor/mentee research team, the scientific merit, overall feasibility of the proposed plan, and the effective use of the requested resources. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of investigators representing UCI School of Medicine.

Deadline: Applications must conform to guidelines stipulated above and be submitted via email to somrd@hs.uci.edu no later than Feb. 17, 2023 by 5 p.m. A select number of top applications may be selected for a brief proposal presentation in late February. For more information, please contact somrd@hs.uci.edu

NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy Resources (New Policy is effective January 25, 2023)
NIH has released a new Data Management and Sharing Policy, effective Jan. 25, 2023, which requires the submission of a Data Management and Sharing Plan as part of all proposals for research that will generate scientific data. The NIH expects that the data generated will be shared broadly at the conclusion of the research. Researchers should plan now for the rollout of these requirements and develop Data Management and Sharing Plans that meet NIH expectations.

The following resources are available now for developing your plan:
  • The UCI School of Medicine Office of Research held an informational webinar on Tuesday, November 8th. View the recording and slides.
  • The NIH held a two-part webinar series. View the recordings and slide decks here.
  • Learn more about this new NIH policy here and in their recent posts here, here, and here. NIH also recently released sample DMS plans and information on how to budget for this new requirement.
  • UCI Libraries has a wealth of resources on their page including the DMPTool and is available for 1:1 consultations.

Research Resources

Are you considering applying for a Limited Funding Opportunities?
In most cases, interested applicants submit a pre-proposal to the Office of Research where a committee reviews all submissions and makes a recommendation to the Vice Chancellor for Research about which proposal should go forward from UCI. Limited opportunities are advertised on fundopp.uci.edu with a link to apply. However, if you do not see a limited opportunity listed, please contact the Research Development Unit (somrd@hs.uci.edu).  We can relay your application plans to the UCI Office of Research so they are aware of the number of interested PIs/units on campus and, if necessary, coordinate PIs or create a review process.

What is Research Development?
Research Development encompasses strategic, proactive, and capacity-building activities designed to support individual faculty and teams of faculty in obtaining extramural research funding and also increase institutional competitiveness. The UCI School of Medicine Research Development Unit (RDU) meets individual faculty to provide information regarding research resources and assistance with grant proposals. Click here to make an appointment.

Intramural & Foundation Funding Opportunities Lists
The Research Development Unit (RDU) has created lists of intramural funding opportunities and foundation funding opportunities. If you have additional opportunities that should be included, please do not hesitate to email at somrd@hs.uci.edu.
COVID-19 Information

Mask Mandate Updated: Masking Recommended But No Longer Required in Indoor, Non-Healthcare Settings
Per the August 19 message from David Souleles, director of the Campus Public Health Response Team, the executive directive on mandatory face coverings has been rescinded effective August 20.
Face coverings are recommended indoors but are not required. Individuals should feel free to continue to wear face coverings, and this protection may be required in some research settings.

The update is consistent with the California Department of Public Health’s recommendations on masking and face coverings.

Please note that masking is still required in all healthcare settings. Face coverings may also be required consistent with public health guidance for a limited duration for those who were COVID-19 positive and returning from isolation, and for those recently exposed to someone with COVID-19. Face coverings are available on campus for all employees and students.

For the latest COVID-19 information, please visit the UCI Forward Website.
