UCI School of Medicine - From the Office of the Dean
Dear colleagues:

It is our pleasure to announce to you that Maheswari “Magi” Senthil, MD, FACS, has been appointed medical director for the Center for Clinical Research (CCR), effective August 1, 2022.

In this role, Dr. Senthil will oversee all operational aspects of the CCR, and will collaborate with sponsors, investigators, and coordinators to resolve scientific and regulatory issues concerning the CCR portfolio of clinical trials. She will oversee clinical research development plans, relationships with sponsors, and the recruitment of new industry relationships for CCR and faculty. She will also help develop strategic initiatives, including various organizational initiatives in CCR, and collaborate with leadership for the UCI Alpha Stem Cell Clinic and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Stern Center for Cancer Clinical Trials and Research in furthering clinical research across UCI. In this new role, she will report to Dr. Daniela Bota, vice dean of clinical research, and will be an important leader within the School of Medicine research enterprise.

Dr. Senthil is a clinical professor of surgery and the John Wayne Cancer Foundation endowed chair in the Department of Surgery. She is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist and surgeon-scientist with a special expertise in the management of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis and advanced malignancies. Dr. Senthil will continue in her role as division chief for surgical oncology in the Department of Surgery, where she leads a strong, multi-institutional translational research program and serves as a primary investigator for many clinical studies, several of which she has initiated.

In addition, Dr. Senthil is a highly respected educator and founder of the complex general surgical oncology fellowship here at UCI School of Medicine; the first within the University of California system. She has received numerous awards for her commitment and dedication to educational excellence including the John Connolly Teacher of the year award in 2021.

The CCR was established in 2019 to centralize clinical trial administration in the School of Medicine. Since that time, the CCR has continued to grow, significantly contributing to the increase in clinical trial award dollars from $45 million in fiscal year 2019, to $107 million in 2022.

Dr. Senthil’s appointment will provide the governance and leadership, market differentiation and growth, and process oversight and stakeholder experience the CCR will need to continue its upward trajectory and to adapt to the current and future needs of our researchers and the community.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Senthil on her new role.

Sincerely,
Michael J. Stamos, MD
