Hispanic Heritage Month and Ways to Celebrate
By Elena Einstein, Principal Manager, Contracts and Grants, NAMS and Member of the USRA Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Born and raised in Southern California, I did not fully see the value of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, especially when so many people are of Hispanic or Latinx decent;  However, as I graduated college and entered the aerospace industry, where most of the employees were predominately white men, I realized how valuable celebrating and acknowledging various ethnic and marginalized groups could be to the organization and for myself.  As a first-generation Costa Rican American, it provides a time to reflect on how our cultures have influenced our societies. Hispanic Heritage Month offers opportunities to learn about the rich and diverse cultures of the American Latinx community, as well as the contributions to American History. Additionally, it serves to create an inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to be themselves.

USRA Career Story
Corporate Affairs and Governance
The Corporate Affairs and Governance organization is comprised of some of USRA’s longest-tenured staff (30 years for Jim Lochner and more than 40 years for David Cummings) and is led by USRA’s newest Vice President, Rochelle Ford, who began in May 2021. The team’s work spans university relations, government relations, external communications and more. It’s likely you’ve worked directly or indirectly with someone from this group so let’s have a quick Q&A to learn more about these individuals.

22nd Annual AMOS Conference
A hybrid Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) conference was held 15-17 September at the Wailua Beach Resort in Maui, Hawai’i. Despite the strict Hawaii entry constraints, over 660 participated onsite, including three USRA conference attendees, with over 400 online viewers. The focus of this conference was Space Domain Awareness, with an emphasis on detecting and maintaining custody of over 35,000 space objects in the near-Earth environment, many of them active military and civilian satellites. This year saw a surge in AFRL and U.S. Space Force as well as academic interest in how to do the same job, but in the cislunar environment, where the increased distance and sheer volume of space are not your friends. The photo is a view of the speakers’ podium, and if you could look closely at the sponsors banner to the right of the speaker, you woul see the USRA logo. While USRA’s sponsorship is alphabetically the last, it is one of the most prominent sponsors listed. USRA has been a corporate sponsor of this AMOS event for over a decade.

International Astronomical Union Names Lunar Crater After Arctic Explorer Matthew Henson: Name Proposed by LPI and NASA
The International Astronomical Union has named a lunar crater—the “Henson Crater”— after Dr. Matthew Alexander Henson, an extraordinary explorer who journeyed to the Earth’s North Pole. He led several expeditions to the Arctic and was awarded a medal by the U.S. Navy in 1945 for his Arctic exploration. In 1996, the U.S. Navy commissioned a ship called USNS Henson. Shortly before his death in 1955, he received two honorary degrees from Howard University and Morgan State University.
