Distracted Walking: Texting on the go can turn a simple stroll into a dangerous adventure

What could be so low-risk as walking, right? Most people began taking their first steps around the same time they began to say their first words. Walking should come naturally for most people. But just start texting and see what happens: People begin bumping into stationary objects, tripping over things, or worse — people step in front of cars. Playing and marching in a college band in Gulf South heat made Jennette Jackson appreciate taking care of herself and being safe. She has spent 25 years with the City of Houston helping employees work safety and take care of themselves.

SAFE2SAVE:
Join the safe driving competition and earn rewards

Texting and driving is extremely dangerous, so the City of Houston is teaming up with SAFE 2 SAVE to combat the distracted driving epidemic by hosting a safe-driving competition for COH employees and your families. Join our SAFE 2 SAVE Competition and be rewarded for safe driving. The competition runs through September. The sooner you join, the better your chances are to win. All staff will compete to see which department can score the most points.

Safety Training Days: Sept. 9 Virtual Session

Your Safety team has a new virtual Safety Training Days session on Thursday, Sept. 9. Learn more about the National Fire Protection Association and its Life Safety Code 101. We will also briefly look at hazard communication from an awareness level.
    NOTE: This virtual session is not a substitute for hazard communication training as required under Administrative Policy 2-14 “Hazard Communications.”  It will, however, help you understand two of the most important facets of maintaining a safe work space.
