Dear Agent,

Our office, and many of your agencies, are operational again and processing insurance claims from last week’s winter storms. As property owners continue to identify and report damage, we want to provide a few reminders about TWIA coverages to share with your affected clients. We have also included federal and state disaster assistance resources.

Reminders About Coverages
  • TWIA covers wind and hail only: TWIA policies are not comprehensive property insurance policies. For damage to be covered by a TWIA policy, it must be the direct result of wind or hail. Damage from burst pipes due to freezing temperatures and downed limbs due to ice are not covered by our windstorm policy. Policyholders and agents are encouraged to review their policies for specific coverage details.
  • Food spoilage: TWIA policies only cover food spoilage if it is the result of a covered loss. For example, food that goes bad because of a power outage can only be covered if the outage was caused by wind or hail.
  • TFPA coverages: Many agents also have clients with Texas FAIR Plan Association (TFPA) policies. TFPA policies are designed to provide only basic homeowners insurance. Damage caused by plumbing system leaks is covered by endorsement HO-400 or HO-401. Each has a limit of $5,000. These endorsements are not available for Dwelling policies.
