"How to Be an Antiracist" Book Review
In recognition of Black History Month, a book recommendation by Joan Schmelz, Director of the NASA Postdoctoral Program and Chair of the USRA Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

A badge of honor in the realm of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is not only what you do to advocate for people who look, think, or behave like you, but perhaps even more importantly, what you do to become a better ally for people who don’t look, think, or behave like you. As a woman, I’ve spent decades battling on the front lines for women-in-science issues, and as a white woman, I’ve also invested time and effort into becoming a better ally for underrepresented minorities in science.

How do you become an ally and not just a bystander? How do you as an individual fight something as pervasive as systemic racism? To use a completely appropriate sports metaphor, how do you get off the bench and get in the game?

The USRA Career Book
Once Upon a Time in Spain and on Two (Distinctly Different) Islands…
In FY 2020 USRA administered internship and postdoctoral fellowship programs which supported approximately 2,338 students and fellows. This programming provides unique and immersive opportunities that enhance learning and research within government laboratories and sometimes, it’s the start of a long-term career at USRA. In this “USRA Career Book” we talk with four individuals who began their stories with a USRA-administered internship or fellowship and continue their work with USRA today. Two of our stories start in Spain, one in England and one in Puerto Rico.

How's Houston?
Due to a winter storm in Texas a few weeks ago, many of USRA’s staff in Houston were without power and water starting from Monday last week and lasting into Sunday. Depending on where people live, some were without power for a few hours while others were affected for several days. By Wednesday, many people did not have palatable running water due to lack of power, and they also may have had frozen and damaged pipes. Food and bottled water also became scarce around this time last week and are only just beginning to return to normal availability.
