New This Week: Limited Stay at Home Order and Phase 2 Research

Please review the below notice from Vice Chancellor Pramod Khargonekar regarding the recent Limited Stay at Home Order and its impact on Phase 2 Research at UCI:

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, a Limited Stay at Home Order was issued by the California Department of Public Health on November 19, 2020:

https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/limited-stay-at-home-order.aspx#

As a result, questions have been raised about its impact on Phase 2 Research.

Students, staff and faculty who are working on an approved Phase 2 research plan are considered part of the essential workforce. Accordingly, they qualify for the exemption specified in the Limited Stay at Home Order.

In addition, it would be prudent to provide essential workers with a certification letter that they can keep with them if they were ever stopped. The letter signed by Ron Cortez, Vice Chancellor for Administration, [can be downloaded here] (It is a good document to have in your possession whenever you are working outside of normal business hours). Please distribute the letter to those who need it.

At this time with increasing spread of COVID-19, it is imperative that faculty and independent researchers (“Plan Owners”) and their teams carefully and consistently follow their approved Research Phase 2 plans. We cannot let our guard down, and we must redouble our efforts to ensure that the safety measures and precautions included in each plan are effective and consistently followed by every team member.

Thank you very much for your commitment and dedication to UCI research. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Pramod P. Khargonekar
Vice Chancellor for Research
Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
