Dear Agent,

The 2020 hurricane season has begun and already there is a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico.

Though Tropical Storm Cristobal may not pose an immediate threat to the Texas coast, we want to remind agents about an exception to TWIA’s application process for new business and increased coverage requests. This exception is required by law.

When TWIA Stops Underwriting New Business and Increased Coverage Requests

When:
  1. A storm is designated as a hurricane by the NOAA National Weather Service or NOAA National Hurricane Center, AND
  2. Within the Gulf of Mexico or the boundaries of 80 degrees west longitude and 20 degrees north latitude
Then: TWIA stops accepting applications for new business or requests for increased coverage.

This moratorium remains in effect until the TWIA General Manager determines that the storm no longer poses a threat to the TWIA coverage area.

Please visit the TWIA website to learn more about this underwriting exception and refer to this chart to determine how coverage effective dates are impacted by a moratorium.

Prepare Your Clients for Hurricanes
As we again head into hurricane season, make sure your clients are ready to recover from a storm by taking these steps today:
  • Enter your clients’ contact information into Policy Center
  • Make sure their residence is properly classified as a primary or secondary residence
  • Confirm with them that they have enough and the right coverage
  • Encourage them to purchase flood insurance before the height of hurricane season
  • Remind them to create an inventory of their property with photographs or video
  • Have them register to use Claims Center now and before any storms. Once registered, they can file a claim any time, view claim information and claim status, and communicate directly with TWIA claims staff.
    • Claims may also be reported by calling TWIA’s 24-hour claims call center at (800) 788-8247.
Sincerely,
Texas Windstorm Insurance Association
