Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce Wei Li, PhD, has joined the UCI School of Medicine as the endowed chair and professor of bioinformatics in the Department of Biological Chemistry.

Li is a senior recruit and part of the campus-wide Faculty Hiring for Leveraged Research Excellence (FLHRE) program. He is one of a total of four bioinformaticians who were recruited through the program to the Department of Biological Chemistry in the School of Medicine and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences.  Li and his team will significantly increase the UCI School of Medicine’s ability to harness big data to develop better diagnostics and therapies for disease.

An expert in cancer bioinformatics, Li uses the vast information from tumor genome sequences and expression profiles to identify mechanism of tumor development. His work has made important contributions to diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and will be an integral part of elevating
the UCI School of Medicine to the forefront of cancer bioinformatics.

Already Li has established himself as an important member of the UCI Health Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UCI Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism, and the Institute of Genomics and Bioinformatics.

Prior to joining UCI, Li was the Dan L. Duncan chair and professor with the Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He was also a visiting professor at the Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou, China.

Li earned his PhD in Biophysics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, and he did his postdoctoral research in the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard School of Public Health.

Li received his BA in Finance and his BS in Biophysics from Nanjing University in Nanjing, China.

Please welcome Wei Li and his team to UCI.
