ZIP Tips: Prevent Dehydration


It’s August in Houston, and recent heat advisories issued by the National Weather Service will not be the last you see this summer. Everyone needs to be careful in this heat, but city employees who work outdoors, in warehouses and those who get in and out of hot vehicles need to be especially aware of heat safety. Last month, the ZIP Newsletter explored risks and symptoms of heat illness. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 911.

5 tips for back-to-school
traffic safety


Houston area school districts will be back in session as soon as August 15.  Expect to see more people on roads and walkways. Road safety should always be a priority, but city employees have an added obligation to drive safely - whether you are in a marked city vehicle or your personal vehicle. Use these tips to help avoid traffic incidents when school is in session.

Safety Spotlight: Bobby Hawkins


Bobby Hawkins has worked for the City of Houston since 2005 and was recently promoted to the position of Safety Administrator with the Human Resources Safety division. Before coming to work for the city, Bobby was employed for 15 years with Solvay America, the U.S. subsidiary of a chemical company based in Belgium. He also served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain. Bobby earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
