School’s out for summer! Hearkening back to my comments during the 2019 UCI Medical School commencement ceremony, when I shared the stage with CBS medical correspondent Dr. Jonathon LaPook, I’m reminded school is out, but not for long. On August 9, we will have our annual White Coat ceremony, where we will welcome in the next class of medical students. Classes will get underway shortly thereafter, with graduate students joining us in September.

Study explains molecular mechanism for therapeutic effects of cilantro
Herbs, including cilantro, have a long history of use as folk medicine anticonvulsants. Until now, many of the underlying mechanisms of how the herbs worked remained unknown. In a new study, researchers uncovered the molecular action that enables cilantro to effectively delay certain seizures common in epilepsy and other diseases.

Mouse, not just tick: New genome heralds change in Lyme disease fight
As Lyme disease increases, researchers have taken a significant step toward finding new ways to prevent its transmission. The experts, who include a pioneer in Lyme disease discovery, have sequenced the genome of the animal carrying the bacteria that causes the illness. The advance by researchers at the University of California, Irvine and colleagues provides a launching pad for fresh approaches to stopping Lyme disease from infecting people.

Dr. Tallie Z. Baram awarded $15M Conte Center grant; funding supports research into early-life origins of mental disorders
The National Institute of Mental Health has awarded Dr. Tallie Z. Baram a five-year, $15 million Silvio O. Conte Center grant. The funding will allow her interdisciplinary team to continue studying how unpredictable parental and environmental signals influence an infant's vulnerability later in life to cognitive and emotional problems, such as risky behavior, addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder.

UCI researchers will help lead an unprecedented national effort to document the intricate cell types and states in breast tissue that underlie cancer. Compilation of the Human Breast Cell Atlas will be supported by a $4 million Seed Network grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

In hopeful news for brain cancer patients, researchers including co-author Charles Limoli, a UCI School of Medicine professor of radiation oncology, have discovered how an experimental technology called FLASH radiotherapy dramatically reduces the adverse cognitive side effects unleashed by traditional radiation treatments.

A physician-scholar first; UCI grad student Sarah O'Dell is pursuing both an MD and a doctorate in the humanities
UCI’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), which lets students earn a joint MD/PhD, is mostly for future physicians who want to also engage in biomedical research. But Sarah O’Dell has a different plan: She’s the first MSTP student to pursue a doctorate in the humanities.

Meeting their match; UCI medical students participate in a dramatic ceremony to learn where they’ll serve residencies
On the morning of March 15, nearly 30,000 graduating medical students around the country participated in annual Match Day ceremonies. At UCI, 109 of them gathered in a courtyard in front of the Medical Education Building for the festive, emotional event.

UCI School of Medicine joins the AMA Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium
UCI School of Medicine has been honored as one of five medical schools to join the AMA Accelerating Change in Medical Education (ACE) Consortium this year. Since joining, the School has been awarded three ACE grants for work in developing an active-learning, case-based student mistreatment-prevention curriculum for faculty and residents called “#MDsToo.”

MedAppJam reinvented as MedAIJam, reflecting focus on Artificial Intelligence
Since 2012, the UCI School of Medicine has partnered with the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences to host an inter-professional student-to-student competition to develop mobile health apps called the MedAppJam. This year, the event took on the name “MedAIJam” to reflect a new focus on artificial intelligence.

For the 19th consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCI Medical Center as one of America’s Best Hospitals. The annual rankings recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. This year, the report highlights the excellence of UCI Health programs in gynecology, No. 20 (tie); gastroenterology & GI surgery, No. 36; and geriatrics, No. 42 (tie) among similar programs nationally. The medical center is ranked No. 10 in California and No. 5 in the Los Angeles metropolitan region.

UCI Health opens community teaching kitchen at family health center in Santa Ana
Amid the aroma of garlic, onion and myriad spices, UCI Health officially opened a gleaming new teaching kitchen at its bustling Family Health Center in Santa Ana. The nearly 1,100-square-foot, state-of-the-art Lois Eisenberg Teaching Kitchen opened July 19 and will be used for group cooking sessions for patients and a host of nutritional education programs for the surrounding community.
