UCI researcher awarded nearly $4 million for studies related to neurological disorders including epilepsy
UCI School of Medicine researcher Geoff Abbott, PhD, has been awarded a $2 million Outstanding Investigator Award/Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) R35 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, and a $1.7 million R01 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.  The MIRA grant is for a study titled, “Ion Channel Transporter Interactions,” and the R01 is for research titled, “GABA Activation of the M-current.”  The 5-year grants support different studies, both focused on understanding the pathophysiology of ion channel-related disorders, including epilepsy, in search of viable therapies.

UCI-led study reveals how fasting can improve overall health and protect against aging-associated diseases
In a UCI-led study, researchers found evidence that fasting affects circadian clocks in the liver and skeletal muscle, causing them to rewire their metabolism, which can ultimately lead to improved health and protection against aging-associated diseases. The study was published recently in Cell Reports.

Following a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Independent Citizens Oversight Committee meeting held last week, University of California, Irvine (UCI) researchers learned they will receive $6 million in funding to support the continued development of a promising new treatment for Huntington’s disease (HD).

A new class of cancer-killing immunotherapeutics is making waves
Michael Demetriou, MD, PhD, and his new glycan dependent T cell recruiter (GlyTR) technology are making waves in the startup arena.  Recently, Demetriou participated in the 3rd Annual UC Entrepreneur Pitch Competition as one of only 12 finalists.  He and his team were also selected as a finalist (out of 170 entries) for the Science2Startup competition, a national competition to be held in Boston on April 23.

The UCI School of Medicine and the VA Long Beach Healthcare System are excited to announce the research projects selected for funding through the Biumvirate Grant Award.  Overall, 17 submissions were received, all with good scientific merit.

The 2019 ARCS Scholars were recognized during a luncheon held in January at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. UCI is among 51 academic partner universities and colleges that are aligned with Advancing Science in America, otherwise known as the ARCS Foundation.

Saud Siddiqui, MD, makes Forbes' 30 Under 30 list
Medical school graduate Saud Siddiqui, MD, was included among Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 list for a company he co-founded while still a student at UCI School of Medicine.  Learn more about Siddiqui's startup, SketchyMedical, which helps visual learners succeed.
 
Kay Linker awarded Public Impact Distinguished Fellowship
The UCI Graduate Division recently awarded Anatomy & Neurobiology PhD student Kay Linker with a Public Impact Distinguished Fellowship for her work on addiction and adolescent drug use.  Watch and learn about her research highlighted on Twitter.
 
UCI medical student elected to AMA Board of Trustees
The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization, has elected UCI School of Medicine student Sarah Mae Smith as the next student member of the AMA Board of Trustees. Smith will assume her position on the board in June 2019.

Recipient of the 2018 Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award Announced
Gianna Fote, a first year biological chemistry student, was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award.  Fote, who graduated from Yale University with a BS in Intensive Biology, matriculated to UCI in 2018 to pursue her MD/PhD.

Match Day 2019 is fast approaching
On March 15, nearly 30,000 graduating medical students around the country will participate in the annual Match Day ceremonies.  At UCI, match candidates will assemble on the lawn in front of the Medical Education building.  Everyone is invited to witness this exciting ceremony and the entire event will be livestreamed for families around the world to watch.  In case you miss it, the festivities will be recoded and photographed.
 
49th annual Lauds & Laurels event honors faculty, students and alumni from the UCI School of Medicine
The 49th annual Lauds & Laurels event, recognizing exceptional faculty, students and alumni, is scheduled to take place May 23.  Fourteen Distinguished Alumni will be recognized including neurosurgeon Bruce Burke, MD '68.

Nearly 150 UCI Health doctors among 2019 Physicians of Excellence
Nearly 150 UCI Health doctors have been named to the 2019 Physicians of Excellence list published in the January 2019 edition of Orange Coast magazine, more than that of any other healthy system in Orange County.

The recognition is bestowed by the Orange County Medical Association, a voluntary physician organization that exists to promote the art and science of medicine, the protection of public health and the betterment of the medical profession.
