Safety Bulletin - September 2018
Safety starts with you

To kick off the Zero Is Possible safety program, we are exploring the most common source of workplace injuries – slips, trips and falls. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that more than one million Americans suffer a slip, trip or fall-related injury every year. They can happen to anyone, in any location, and city employees are not immune. In Fiscal Year 2018, slips, trips and falls caused 304 employee injury claims. Slips and falls are the leading cause of workers’ compensation claims and are the leading cause of occupational injury for people aged 55 years and older. More than half of these safety incidents are caused by lack of situational awareness, distraction and complacency. Injuries from slips, trips and falls are preventable, and safety starts with you.
