Dear Agent,

Disasters breed crimes of opportunity, and a scam is the last thing we want our policyholders to deal with right now.

Please be aware that TWIA's Special Investigations Unit is monitoring reports of fraudulent activities in communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. We have received reports of individuals in Corpus Christi impersonating TWIA adjusters and requesting payment for inspections (TWIA adjusters do not ask for, or accept, money). In the Rockport area, a contractor was recently arrested for price gouging clients on tree removal services.

Make sure your policyholders are protected from fraud by sharing the following tips:

  • Ask contractors and adjusters for ID. If possible, confirm contractor identities with local officials. TWIA adjusters have TWIA badges.
  • Be aware that a TWIA adjuster will never request payment for service.
  • Contractors performing major repairs in Rockport, Corpus Christi, and Port Aransas are required to register with the City. Check online for additional information: Rockport, Corpus Christi, and Port Aransas.
  • If you suspect disaster-related fraud activities, call the TWIA Fraud Hotline at 800-625-0425.

We are distributing this graphic on Facebook and Twitter about protecting yourself against contractor fraud. Please share with your policyholders and fellow agents.

Thank you,

Texas Windstorm Insurance Association
