| NSF Biosketches required to use SciEncv (proposals due after 10/23) | The National Science Foundation (NSF) will require biographical sketches and current and pending support to be generated using the online platform, SciENcv, for all NSF proposals due on or after Oct. 23, 2023. In preparation for complying with this requirement, UCI libraries has provided information on their websites and office hours on Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. to assist with SciENcv questions, NIH and NSF documentation for Biosketches and current & Pending/In-Kind reporting.

| Prior Approval Requests for Revisions to an Approved Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan Must be Submitted Using the Prior Approval Module (NOT-OD-23-185) | The purpose of this Notice is to remind the extramural research community that any changes to an approved Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMS Plan) (for funded awards subject to the Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy) requires the recipient to submit a timely formal prior approval request to the funding NIH Institute, Center or Office (ICO).
This notice also informs the community that recipients must submit these requests through the Prior Approval Module in eRA Commons. This functionality will be available for NIH grants effective Oct. 12, 2023, and will be used exclusively for submitting requests for updating the DMS Plan. | We have been collecting information about new awards sent in by the School of Medicine research community and have created this space to share the news. - Dean Wang, MD (Orthopaedic Surgery), received a NIAMS R41 investigating “Optically Promoting Cardiac Maturation Using Engineered Peptides.” This proposal will examine the safety and activity of the analogous animal product, Chondrofluid-MP, engineered from minipig rib cartilage, toward generating essential data for a phase II application to perform long-term (6 months or more) preclinical studies. An effective arthroscopic cartilage repair and regeneration strategy will allow for treatment of chondral defects during any joint arthroscopy while providing the quicker rehabilitation that all patients desire.

| Call for Cancer Research Proposals | The UCI Cancer Research Institute is pleased to announce that funds are available through the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant. This institutional grant will fund several proposals for one year at a level up to $60,000 per award. All eligible faculty from each school at the University of California, Irvine, are encouraged to apply, so long as the proposal has a clear link to some aspect of cancer research. The purpose of the seed grants is to provide pilot funds for research in both basic and clinical cancer-related problems. Learn more and apply.

| Developing novel theory and methods for understanding the genetic architecture of complex human traits (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (PAR-23-302) | The goal of this NOFO is to support applications for novel theory and methods development that enable better understanding of how genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to complex trait variation across individuals, families and populations. Approaches should be interdisciplinary drawing from the natural and social sciences, account for interdependencies across scales of biological, social and ecological organization, and make extensive use of theory, modeling and validation with available large-scale datasets. | ICTS Workshop: Responsible Conduct of Research | Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) is increasingly viewed as an essential component of training, regardless of a researcher's source of funding. NIH requires RCR training that involves at least 8 contact hours between participants and faculty. Limited opportunities are advertised on fundopp.uci.edu with a link to apply. However, if you do not see a limited opportunity listed, please contact the Research Development Unit. We can relay your application plans to the UCI Office of Research so they are aware of the number of interested PIs/units on campus and, if necessary, coordinate PIs or create a review process. |
