Dear faculty, staff and students,
We are writing to inform you that the UCI School of Medicine will officially pause admissions for the Master of Science degree program in Biomedical and Translational Science (MS-BATS), effective immediately, with an expected restart in 2024.
The MS-BATS program has proven to be a tremendous program in the School of Medicine, enabling our researchers to push the envelope on clinical research and enhancing our students’ research and career paths. Students in the program engage in a flexible, interdisciplinary clinical research program that is geared for both experienced researchers seeking additional clinical skill development and for students interested in conducting clinical research.
The primary action which led to this decision is the upcoming retirement of the program founders, Sherrie Kaplan, PhD, and Sheldon Greenfield, MD. These dedicated co-directors have provided visionary leadership in their engaging work and ongoing commitment to the program. Dr. Kaplan has served as the director of MS-BATS since its inception and Dr. Greenfield has worked steadfastly to develop and grow the program.
Both Drs. Kaplan and Greenfield have taught numerous courses for the program and mentored significant numbers of students through their research and thesis years. Many of their mentees have gone on to make significant clinical research contributions and enjoy illustrious careers in the biomedical sciences.
The School of Medicine will soon start a search for a new program director. Starting July 1, 2023, Eric Vilain, MD, PhD, director of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, and Dan Cooper, MD, associate director of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science will serve as interim co-directors of the MS-BATS program.
Drs. Kaplan and Greenfield will continue with the program and ensure that currently enrolled students will complete degree requirements and provide support for their academic experience through graduation.
Please contact Peter Donovan, PhD, associate dean at pdonovan@uci.edu, or Leora Fellus, director of Graduate Studies at lfellus@uci.edu for any needs related to your interest in the MS-BATS program at UCI.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Stamos, MD
