Ryan O’Connell, MD |
I’m pleased to announce that Ryan J. O’Connell, MD, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 2026. He will succeed Edwin S. Monuki, MD, PhD, who has served as the Warren L. Bostick Chair for the department since 2015.
O’Connell is a board-certified pathologist and clinical informaticist who currently serves as associate professor in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, with a joint appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He oversees clinical informatics as UCI Health’s associate chief medical information officer and recently served as the assistant dean for Medical Group Performance Improvement in the School of Medicine.
Since joining UC Irvine in 2018, O’Connell has led major initiatives integrating technology and clinical care, including the successful implementation of the Epic Beaker laboratory information system and UCI Health’s ongoing transition to digital pathology and AI-enabled diagnostics. As interim chief of anatomic pathology, he’s also been responsible for guiding the division through a period of significant growth and innovation.
O’Connell earned his MD from the Keck School of Medicine of USC, followed by residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at LAC+USC Medical Center (now Los Angeles General Medical Center) and a fellowship in clinical informatics at UC Irvine. He also has an MBA from USC and a graduate certificate in biomedical informatics from Oregon Health & Science University. He is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists.
Please join me in thanking Dr. Monuki for his decade of service as chair and congratulating Dr. O’Connell on accepting this interim appointment.
Sincerely, |
