Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Gerard Slobogean, MD, MPH, FRCSC, as the new director of the Master of Science in Biomedical and Translational Science (MS-BATS) program at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, effective Sept. 1, 2025.

Slobogean will also join our faculty as a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and will provide specialized clinical care through the Orthopaedic Trauma Division at UCI Health. He comes to us from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he has served as associate professor and director of clinical research in the Department of Orthopaedics since 2014.

In his new role as director, Slobogean will lead the continued growth and success of the MS-BATS program – advancing our mission to train the next generation of translational scientists and industry leaders. He will also focus on strengthening faculty development pipelines by engaging UC Irvine’s diverse community of undergraduates, medical students and residents, while expanding educational opportunities for those outside of existing programs who seek to conduct high-quality multidisciplinary clinical research at the intersection of basic science and clinical medicine.

Slobogean is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in complex fracture care. He has extensive experience with polytrauma patients, as well as the treatment of non-unions, malunions, and pelvis and acetabular fractures.

He is a recognized leader in multicenter clinical trials and serves on several international trial committees. He lectures widely on clinical trial design, research methodology and evidence-based orthopaedics, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has also authored over 275 peer-reviewed publications.

Slobogean earned his medical degree and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of British Columbia. He later completed fellowships in orthopaedic trauma at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (University of Maryland Medical System) and in shoulder and elbow reconstruction at the University of Toronto. He also holds a master of public health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Please join me in welcoming Slobogean to the UC Irvine School of Medicine community. We look forward to seeing him in the fall.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Stamos, MD
Dean, UC Irvine School of Medicine
