Dear colleagues,

The California Resolution for National Latino and Latina Physician Day (NLPD) passed the Assembly, designating October 1 as the official day to honor the ongoing contributions of Latinx physicians in healthcare. In California, the Latinx population makes up approximately 39%, however, disproportionally, only 6% of physicians identify as Latino or Latina in the United States.

We acknowledge the significant healthcare barriers for many people in the Latinx community impacted by social and economic factors, language and cultural barriers, lack of access to preventative care and health insurance.

The need for an increasingly diverse healthcare workforce to address these disparities continues to undergird our mission-based programs within the UCI School of Medicine, in particular, the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC) and the PRIME-LC Residency Track within the Department of Family Medicine. Additionally, the UCI Health Family Health Center, a federally qualified health center (FQHC) continues to improve access to care through medical, dental, behavioral and social health services impacting patients largely identifying as Hispanic/Latinx and monolingual Spanish speakers.

In recognition of National Latinx Physician Day at the UCI School of Medicine, the Office of Belonging, Equity and Empowerment is partnering with PRIME-LC, the UCI School of Medicine Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), the UC PRIME Pre-Health Pathways Program (UC3P), Chicanos Latinos for Community Medicine (CCM) and the UCI Health Latinx Physicians Outreach Group to honor the current and future physician leaders working towards increased representation in medicine … as 6% is not enough.

We invite you to join us to celebrate NLPD on campus or at the UCI Health Medical Center in Orange. Remarks will be given from 12-12:30 p.m. at both locations.
