| Women Supporting Women: A Legacy of USRA's Scholarship Alumnae | For nearly 25 years, USRA has been awarding undergraduate scholarships to recognize students with promising careers in science and engineering. Some alumni awardees have continued beyond their undergraduate degrees to capture professions with NASA, achieve faculty positions, become test flight engineers for the U.S. Air Force, and even establish their own companies, for example. Also notable to the legacy of USRA’s scholarship awards is that nearly 75% of the awardees since 2017 are women. In fact, 100% of the 2023 awardees were women. For women’s history month, let’s describe one story that demonstrates the infinite impact of supporting women at the outset of their careers in science and research.

| USRA's Annual Symposium: Space Nuclear Technology | On March 21, USRA and The Space Policy Institute at The George Washington University presented a symposium entitled “Space Nuclear Technology: Research and Development for Evolving Space Missions.” The keynote address was delivered by former NASA astronaut and Ad Astra Rocket Company founder, Franklin Chang-Díaz. Speakers and panelists discussed topics related to space nuclear technology including challenges presented by technology gaps, infrastructure and regulation. Several speakers emphasized leveraging partnerships between government agencies, including internationally, as well as building a workforce of space nuclear experts through partnerships with universities. The annual symposium was followed by USRA’s 55th annual meeting of the Council of Institutions on March 22 – more details will be described in the next edition of Discovery Newsletter.
